How Many Sleep Hours You Need? Sleep is the basic need of everyone, in addition to food, drink, and oxygen, in order to survive. For humans, sleep is a vital indicator of overall health and wellbeing. But how many hours of sleep is needed to stay healthy?
Almost everyone knows that getting a quality night's sleep is important, but not many of us really do get 8 hours of sleep each night. Many of us seem to suffer from "sleeping debt" and no longer enjoy the feeling of waking up with a really fresh body.
To complicate things again, stimulant substances such as coffee and energy drinks, alarm clocks, and electronic standby lights disrupt the "circadian rhythm" or natural sleep-wake cycle.
The need for hours of sleep varies depending on age and is strongly influenced by lifestyle and health. To determine how much sleep you need, it is important to study not only the age but also the lifestyle factors that affect the quality and quantity of sleep, such as work schedules and stress factors.
