Dear WhatsApp friends, please send breakfast money and not Good Morning messages. Thank You!

The Good Morning messages are a nuisance on WhatsApp. But with the latest WhatsApp feature, which is a WhatsApp-based payment service that uses India's UPI network, it is possible that the chat app may solve the "Good Morning" problem. At least, theoretically. All it needs to do is tell people who are sending Good Morning message to also attach some money to the message, like Rs 25 that will truly make the morning of the "good morning" receiver good. Basically ask people to put their money where their mouth is. No more empty and soul-less "good mornings".

Every morning, just like millions of other WhatsApp users in India, I too get Good Morning messages. They come in the groups I am part of. They come from people who are somehow in my contact list even though I have not met them. They come from family members. And they come in all sundry shapes and forms. Some are Gifs. Some videos. Some have cheery flowers as their image background. Some use sunrise. All say, Good Morning. A senseless, useless, good morning.

Recently, the Wall Street Journal talked about the trend of the "good morning messages" in India and highlighted how these messages were clogging phones, making them slow. The problem apparently is big enough to be on the radar of Google engineers, who are trying to figure out how to unclog the phones, clean these messages and avoid the performance problems. It is to deal with this problem that Google recently came out the Files Go app that allows users to delete all good morning messages in one go, or so claims the WSJ.

But it seems there is another way to solve the problem, now that the payment feature is part of WhatsApp. The payment feature has been built using India's Unified Payment Network aka UPI, and hence is available to almost everyone who has a bank account in India. It is also rather easy to set-up and easy to use. When you want to send money, all you have to do is tap on the attachment button in any open chat and then hit on the payment button. In less than a minute you can transfer the money to any of your contact.

So, my dear WhatsApp friends, here is an idea. Do not send me a Good Morning message. It doesn't make my morning good. Neither it makes my day better. And irrespective of whatever motivational quote you may have attached with your "Good Morning message", it is not going to motivate me. These are empty words, and an annoyance. Instead, if you really want to motivate me to do something on a morning, in a day, in life, send me some money.

For example, on Monday -- a day universally hated by all those who have to reach an office in morning -- send some breakfast money instead of a boring good morning message. That will really help my mood, make my day. In case, you don't want to send just some money -- but money is totally fine I tell you -- you can send the money along with your Good Morning message. A Rs 50 note attached to a motivational quote will do wonders for your friend's motivation. Just try it. You will suddenly find that your friends will love all your good morning messages and all your motivational quotes will mean something to them.

But of course, this is going to happen. You know your friends are useless. Mostly. So, here is another idea for you to deal with the good morning messages. Next time you get one, reply back. Tell the senders it's not helping and if they really care, they should send some money next time with the Good Morning message. That may work. The "Good Morning" messages may probably stop coming.
