if someone thinks your post adds value to the site they can upvote it using the up tick next to the dollar amount. This gives you a reward which varies depending on how much steempower the person upvoting has. use the #steem-help tag to find articles that can help you with anything from adding pictures to your posts to how to cash out.

Hmm ... I was under the impression this was going to essentially be reddit but without the censorship.
People are posting here to make real-world money?

it is just like reddit @vote4jill without the censorship, but we are rewarded with a crypto currency called steem which you can exchange for bitcoin then "real" cash.
it is very confusing at first but there are plenty of articles about to help you get the hang of it. if you get stuck you can ask for help either in steem chat or by writing a post and using the steem-help tag.

Well, thanks for the info. I do foresee a bunch of people posting what they think the majority of their target audience wants to hear though, rather than just speaking their mind.
PS: There is apparently a comment branch limit (I had to reply to my own comment instead of yours). Do you know if that's going to be fixed?

Correct me if I'm wrong but won't that result in one of the worst forms of censorship - self censorship.
ie, won't it result in people taking profit into consideration when deciding what to comment/post, rather than just speaking their mind?

@vote4jill In theory yes it could but as censorship is actively opposed here most people aren't, those posts that would be hidden elsewhere (such as most of the stuff our large community of anarchists write about) tend to do rather well so censoring yourself would in effect be an act of self sabotage.

I think it may be a glitch of some sort I haven't come across it before.
