RE: Smartphone addiction - one of the very recent problem

in #writing7 years ago

Smartphone Addiction, like any Addiction, is a very serious problem that tends to isolate the individual, creates antisocial behavior, and comes complete with its' own form of withdrawals.
It is an extension of Addiction to watching Television Programming and, studies have shown, withdrawal from these sort of things carries withdrawals far worse than Addiction to substances like Heroine.

What struck me about your post was that you included 'increasing force of mind,' which to me means building willpower, it means building discipline, self-determination, and self-empowerment.
It means getting out to meet people, to talk to friends and family, to be more social in a face-to-face setting, to go out and learn how to do things beyond the digital scope.

Making 'phone free zones' is a good start, but including things like Meditation or Prayer, getting outside to ride a bike, walk in the woods or parks, playing with our children, reading books actually made of paper, with printed word.

To place the digital sphere into its' proper context, we should become less attached to our online activities and maintain a focus within the here and now, as most Addictions begin as a method of escaping the present moment, thus, never having to face reality.

Smartphones, Computers, Television, these all have their uses and, in proper context, are okay to use; they can be a great benefit if we use them properly as the tools they were meant to be rather than allowing them to use us and dominate our lives.

It really is a matter of changing our perspective, of changing the way we approach things and put them to work FOR us to help us learn things in conjunction with books and courses at local colleges and universities or even trade schools.

Some people say that replacing one addiction with another is not the answer, I agree, but changing our habits is the first step to breaking addiction.
So we can turn to learning, to improving ourselves, and seeing how we can utilize the digital sphere to this end; how can we use social networking to improve our knowledge and interaction in the Physical World?
Learning proper exercises, learning how to fix things or build/create things, learning being the key word, but we must have the determination to apply all these things rather than checking our Social Media Feeds every five minutes we could do a set of exercises or work on a project.

We should likely also include focus training, such as meditation and mental exercises in this.

Thank you for sharing.
