Jessica Jones is a Marvel series on Netflix that has made some news lately with it’s decision to use only female directors on the set of Season 2. What could be viewed as a publicity stunt from a cynical perspective was really just about inclusion. The show runner, Melissa Rosenberg initially wanted to include “more” female directors, but was pushed to further use them on all 13 episodes by Netflix’s vice president for original series, Allie Goss. This makes for an incredibly interesting situation. As a viewer, I’ll admit that it’s both surprising and unsurprising while watching the series. On the one hand, it’s completely unnoticeable. Meaning, the action is hard hitting, with as much punch and innovation as any Marvel show from Daredevil to The Punisher. Blood is spilled and people are flung mercilessly through walls and windows alike.
But something else comes out in this series, that was a surprising realization. I found myself more connected to the relationships throughout the series, and what’s more, saw relationship dynamics that I had never really explored before. The series does an incredible job playing out situations like: plutonic friendship, complicated sisters, mother daughter anger and forgiveness, non-pornographic lesbian sexual pursuit, and males in positions of power respecting and supporting women. It was truly refreshing to see non-stereotypical conclusions to storylines that at first glance seemed like well-trod ground.
I have no intention of revealing any spoilers by giving examples here, so I’ll leave it with this. Go watch this awesome “superhero” series. And enjoy the hell out of the heart that it is infused with by these talented directors (who all happen to be female.)

I read your ideas.
I agree with you.
@writesbackwards I do not understand the fuss about having a all female directors for Jessica Jones 2.One thing I see, is that most women have this fear that men left to call the shot is a threat to their womanhood.I am not a male or female chauvinist but I speak the truth on issue such as this.
Making the movie a all female affairs for me, would not determine how well the script and the movie goes.I would want those women who throw the feminist cards,to know that men would always be men and they would continue to take the head.God knew what He was doing when HE made male first then the female.
Women should understand their purpose in creation and the role they should play.Anyways, cool post.I updated this post.
Niiice. You do realize that the bible says men were created first and was also recorded through the tradition of all-male Rabbis, right? I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm saying it might've played out differently if Judaism were a matriarchal tradition ;)
Al female directors? And so what?
A film is a film.
A great production is driven by parameters like budget, technical know-how, creative input, etc...... Not the Film crew's gender.
I couldn't care less that they are all female, though the suggestion that there was a push for all female directors (no men allowed in other words) is a little disturbing. I'm all for equal chances and opportunities but why start discriminating male directors in the process?
Perhaps, for a single season, it's not so much discrimination as an experiment. Now, if all the power players agreed that for generations only females would direct shows, then you'd have a discrimination situation.

That is something you don't see all the time. Just female directors, pretty special. I would have to check it out for sure. I'm not that much into series but I like Jessica Jones.
Quite an interesting article. It was a good read. Well done.

I can not wait to watch soon, hopefully exciting like the previous series.
I know you don't want to give any spoilers, but Jessica did seem more conflicted and the theme was dark. I believe that was the goal of the show runner (who happens to be a female as well). I enjoyed it.
Is it possible that you felt more connected to the relationships because you watched it knowing that there were women directing it this season and that predisposed you to focus more on the relationships between the characters?
If you felt this connection throughout the season, I would venture a guess that it had little to do with female directors being involved, the credit in that case should go to the actors.
nice review. i believe its high time i started seeing this series
I think the positions should be filled based on knowledge and experience. The most qualified person should get the position. It’s almost like their mentality is men do it to us , so well do it back to them .
Well I've seen the trailers of this show and she seems kick-ass and angry but I just can't bring myself to watch it. Maybe soon. :D
I don't think there would be any problem having more female directors as long as they make a good show. :)
