Is it possible that you felt more connected to the relationships because you watched it knowing that there were women directing it this season and that predisposed you to focus more on the relationships between the characters?
If you felt this connection throughout the season, I would venture a guess that it had little to do with female directors being involved, the credit in that case should go to the actors.
