The air is hot and dry, parching your throat. No water. Little light.
You squint and see a man in the distance. This must be the one they told you about. He can help. You wave your arms and call to him. He saunters over, head down, cowboy hat covering his face. His dark black clothing ripples around him in the breeze. That breeze always blows, but it's never cool. No relief from the heat.
The stranger lifts his head to reveal a sharp nose and two striking eyes. The eyes scan you, searching, appraising. Are you a threat? No, not even close. He relaxes and moves his hand away from the revolver on his hip.
You tell him you're looking for information about someone and were told he could give it to you. He raises an eyebrow and looks away, disinterested. You tell him it's important, but he spits and turns to leave. You tell him you met someone and need to know his story...@themanwithnoname.
The stranger spins around and grabs you by both shoulders!
"Who did you say?" he growls!
You respond that you had talked with @themanwithnoname online. Chatting on a message board. You say that you're trying to figure out who he is. You ask for the stranger's help. Does he know @themanwithnoname?
The man brushes off your shoulders and releases you. He says, "I don't normally share a whole lot. Truth be told, I'd rather shoot than talk, but sometimes talking is the only way to get what you need."
"@themanwithnoname? Yeah, I know him. He was born just outside of Santa Fe. They make up stories about him being from Tucumcari or any other such place, but it was always Santa Fe. They say he's the son of a thousand fathers and his mother...well, it's better not to talk about her." He pauses and cigar smoke slips from his lips.
"He took up bounty killing when he was young. More like he happened upon it. The boy had always been a good shot, and one day when he was riding through some new town looking for work, he saw some fella roughing up a lady. He didn't take to kindly to that. @themanwithnoname walked up and told the man to draw. The man obliged and No Name shot him through the heart...from the hip."
The stranger motions with his hand to show you, for emphasis, apparently.
"No Name didn't even know the man was the leader of the gang that ran the town. Just shot him dead. The townsfolk called the sheriff who gave No Name the reward that had been on the man's head. From then on, he was hooked. Kill bad guys and get paid to do it? It was a perfect fit."
When you have to shoot, shoot! Don't talk.
-Tuco Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez "The Rat"
"It's been like that ever since. He rides around showing up at this place or that. Always shooting, always killing." The stranger laughs. "One time he took on a gang of five men at one time. Got shot 6 times in the heart and didn't go down." He had made a bulletproof vest out of a a sheet of metal and they couldn't kill him."
You interrupt him and declare that @themanwithnoname sounds like a great guy, a protector of the people. No response. You marvel at how well the stranger knows No Name.
"Yes, I know him well," he says. "You might say I know him better than most. In fact, I've known him in two different lives. Once as a friend. The last time... well, let's just say that's how I ended up here. At least he had the courtesy to send my hat and gun along with me."
You suddenly get a sinking feeling in your stomach. This wasn't someone who had information about @themanwithnoname, this was someone who had experience with @themanwithnoname... and who had lost.
The stranger steps closer. You back away, your heart racing, but he matches your steps. "Most folks don't know who I am, but I'll tell you," he says, cocking his head to the side. "I'm Angel Eyes! I've spent these long years scouring this god-forsaken Underworld for any information I can find about our friend, @themanwithnoname. I've been searching for his location, aliases, accomplices... anything and everything about him! But most important of all, I've been searching for... a way back!"
He spits.
"And now, I have one. You!"
BANG!!
You hear a loud pop, light flashes, and you begin to feel a warm trickle as you put your hand to your stomach. Your vision narrows and begins to grow dark.
Then...
Nothing.
THIS IS AMAZING. you have really got the talent for story telling - right from the beginning you pull in the reader and don't let go till you dump them at end of story - hungry for more...
If I ever get a book published, I'm going to hit you up for that quote. People will be so curious, they will buy the book in droves! Ha ha
If you finish the story - I see no reason why it could not be published - hell - I'm looking forward to the movie now....
Thanks, man! I'm not sure what is involved in getting published. Maybe I'll look into it if I'm able to keep it rolling. :)
a fun story :) That man with no name sounds like someone worth knowing.
I'm glad you liked it. I'm still planning out what will come next for him, but I want to take the time to do it justice.
Well! That was not the introduction I was expecting, but well done, it kept me engaged and reading all the way to the end!
I got the feel of the narrator - a dry-throated, gruff voice - so that's a great start to dragging the reader in.
My advice is always to read and re-read before posting, but as I am one for editing after posting, I can't say too much about that practice ;)
The only thing I can say with regards to this is the spacings. Sometimes, there seems to be no space between words.
(And I personally prefer a space after ellipses, but... personal preference).
I'm so pleased you've decided to join in. How about an introduction about the guy writing about @themanwithnoname?
Looking forward to more of your writing.
Dang it! I was so impressed with myself. I read, and re-read the article, but didn't read again after publishing. Pride goes before the fall, right? Ha ha. Thank you for pointing that out.
I believe I figured out what went wrong. Apparently the space after the ellipses is optional in life, but required in Markdown. That's what caused the issue. I like how you showed an example in your explanation.
We'll see if "The man behind @themanwithnoname" makes an introduction. He's still figuring out Steem and trying to determine how much of himself will be revealed! Regardless, he plans on presenting a character that's as engaging as possible. :)
Side note: I use :) fairly often in my commenting. I try not to use it in my posts as I think I should be able to communicate my thoughts clearly without the use of emojis. However, in commenting, I try to be a little less formal and want to make sure I'm communicating my tone. Thoughts?

Wow @themanwithnoname I was not expecting this to engage me so incredibly fast. Props to you my friend! Please, more of this gem :)
I'm glad it was engaging. It seems I have my work cut out for me in regards to coming up with the next chapter. What did you think of the voice? I haven't written using the "You" perspective. I think I got it from a video game-type scenario where you would be getting information from the console. i.e. you walk in to the woods.
Now thats some high qualtity H2o! I wish the author had a name. Rumor is themanwithnoname passed through these parts not too long ago. Great post!
Heh, just don't let Angel Eyes know if you spot him. ;)
Wow, you really know to hook your reader! I hope you don't keep us hanging to long.
I'm glad you found it interesting. I hadn't planned to do another installment, but it appears there's demand for it. I'll have to work on that. Thanks for the encouragement. :)
You caught me unawares and fast. I am definitely hooked. Suspenseful. I can't wait to read more.
Right on! Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't sure how my readers would respond to getting killed at the end...or reading from their own perspective. It seems to have worked out though. I wanted to at least give it a shot. Ha ha. Pun not intended, but it sure worked out.
Haha, very cool my man! I like this a lot. I'm hoping there may be some more episodes @themanwithnoname, don't hold out on me!
I may have to do that. Glad to hear there's a demand for that sort of thing. :)
I was expecting the man with a name but it still ended up that the man does not yet have a name or at least his picture. Waiting to 👀the man
Ha ha, if only my parents had given me one. ;)
I'm surprised that you made it through the story. I really thought you died at the end. Sometimes I crack myself up.
Well, I didn't know you were a writer of fiction? :) I love this, and metaphorically, I'd say the 'character' is a good fit for you!
Oh, fiction doesn't mean real? Darn. I messed that up! ;)
I hadn't really planned on doing "writing" but the opportunity arose, so I wanted to take advantage of it. We'll see what comes from it. I do like writing and I can create scenarios well, so it could become a thing.
I had all kinds of tidbits in there. I'm curious how many people caught on to.
haha you're funny!
I think I caught on to a few of your 'tidbits' for sure:)
I like entertaining people, so sounds like I'm doing my job.
Keep those tidbits in mind. I think I might do something with that later on.
Sounds good...now I'm curious :)
I guess we'll both just have to wait and see. :)
You must be a speed reader to absorb 5 minutes of reading in less than 2!
What part did you like the best?
Haha, I asked the same of a comment I got last night! No response.
Doesn't surprise me. It's my first "real" spammer though, so I'm excited. That means I've made it on Steemit, right? :)

YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS! I'm so happy right now!!!! I'm a real Steemian! Ha ha ha. :P
