I realized some people are struggling with how the @originalworks bot works.
HOW TO USE:
Reply to ANY post with @originalworks to activate it!
It's that simple.
Let's look at some examples.

That's it! It's very simple.
You help me out a lot by actually using it. Whenever you use it, I am able to also beta test it to see if I can improve its accuracy.
HOW IT WORKS:
I won't go into all the details but essentially, I have an algorithm that I made which determines if a post is original or not.
There are some conditions though:
- Article must be 30 words or longer.
- This bot does not look at originality of images.

I have used it and like it. A little explanation of how it distinguishes a quote from plagiarism would be appreciated. I recently ran into cheetah even though I quoted the source of some technical specs. I should maybe used quote tags instead of citing the source.
Power up the bot and it will be useful. I tip it when it fires.
My algorithm uses fragments. So I do not identify quotes, but rather I have a weighted score system to assess the originality of the overall work. If you only have a few sentences that are copied from somewhere, then it won't count as non-original as long as other parts of your work is original.
cheetah did that tome as well. I quoted a 'part' of an article; linked to that source article, and cheetah still showed up in my replies saying it found similar content; (Same link as is in the body of my text) - I've never liked robots; I watch Sci-fi ..... most of them are a danger to 'humanity' but that's a rant for another time :)

No, the bot does not catch video or image plagiarism at this time.
For that you need a deep-learning algorythm I assume. These pre-AIs can already do that very well.

I have a question that's prob simple, as I never thought about how a bot can catch plagiarism: if someone is quoting a large portion of something, for example a book report or news story, or even short quotes, you (or the algorithm) then examine the whole post for context? If you see that happen please respond to the bot, this way I can go through my responses and try to improve the bot if need be.

original works says I'm good, but it's mostly a quotation from a book... one that's probably not available online. I rekon your bot is looking for similar content posted online and wouldn't have stuff from books available to it.
So this is actually one of the strong points of this bot.
I did my best to not punish works which use quotes while still writing their own bit on it.
I don't consider a post like that to be plagiarism.

Like it because is good to know more about content we read. Like @cheetah but add something new. I hope will be still beter.
This seems to be incredibly simple and user-friendly.
However, transparency would be helpful regarding the inner workings of the bot and what its judgment really implies. Or maybe all I need, really, would be some intuition on the degree of confidence. Maybe an "orginality" score instead of a digital outcome would be helpful.

It is funny that you say that, because initially that was the direction I was going too.
Technically this is doable, and the algorithm is such that it is well suited for that.
As of now I am working towards "perfecting" the accuracy, although it isn't there yet it is pretty good right now.
That being said, if I use a score based system, people who use quotes might come out with a low score. I am trying to avoid this, because currently, even if you have quotes, as long as the rest of your material is original this bot will mark it as original.
It is a good thought though, and something I will investigate once I clean up everything else a bit more.
As far as how it works, I do not want to reveal too much and allow for abuse, but it is essential a fragmentation based algorithm. Feel free to try it with plagiarized articles, and let me know how it goes!

I see the point - a bad rating for quoting a lot seems counterproductive.
I love the idea behind that bot. One of the only useful bots out there (with cheetah and twitterbot also coming to mind). Do you plan on making the bot check for originality if we tag it in our post (not in the comments) ? It would be great to be able to do that because commenting originalworks on other people's posts is all good but on my post it feels like an unnecessary comment.
