AFRICAN TIME
All over Africa,no bad habits is perhaps as glorifies as the African time.despite that,it has earn entry into the dictionary. Of course, since we cannot control external circumstances like traffic and family emergencies, it is impossible to arrive on time, but in Nigeria, it has become a norm.
African time according to Wikipedia is th3 perceived cultural tendency in most part of Africa toward a more relaxed attitude to time.this is sometimes used in pejorative sense about tardiness to events appointments and meetings.
In Nigeria, many events starts hours late and runs on and on. According to experts, while some people are always on time is because they don't want to be tardy, some on the other hand run late because they don't want to be early.they feel if they arrive too early, they may appear too desperate.
Other think being early requires having to sit around and do nothing and the waiting time can be use to execute other project but they seem to forget that as soon as you start the time is up.
Some also feel awkward and uncomfortable waiting. They might even feel as if others are watching and judging them, but whether or not is true, arriving few minutes early makes you feel proud and confident but arriving too early a times makes also feel foolish and childish.
Other experts traced the uniqueness of African time to the poly chronic nature of African cultures people tend to manage more than one huge work at a time rather than organizing on which to be done next,as it is done In monochronic cultures of the western world.
A monochronic time system means things are done one at a time.under this system, time is scheduled, arranged and managed. Germany and America are monochronic societies rooted into he industrial revolution, where factory life requires labour force to be on hand is placed at an appointed hour.
In poly chronic time system, several things are done at once and a more field approach is taken to scheduling time. Example of poly chronic behaviour includes, cooking and watching television or browsing the internet while sitting on meetings. This can make one to easily loose focus or often change plan.
