I don't have anything to write today. I haven't had anything to write this whole week, except for nonsense. Hmmm, maybe I'll just write some nonsense and share it... right?... here it goes. I'll write about today's 5-minute freewrite topic.
Witches in literature
The victims of prejudice and ignorance
A topic that has always touched me is the way that witches were treated by the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages. This was not an isolated case, but it's the one that touches me the most. Anyone could be accused of being a witch or a supporter of witches. Then, through torture, they'd make them confess being witches, and they would in order to end the pain, only to be later burned on a pyre.
One side decides you must die an agonizing death, and after days of torture and horrible conditions in a dungeon, you find yourself being set on fire before a booing crowd that laughs at your demise and wholeheartedly approves the comedy installed upon the agony of your final moments. And who was this scapegoat? A mother or a daughter, a sister, or maybe just a helping hand, or maybe she was a horrible person who deserved what she got, but who is anyone to decide anyone else's fate?
I keep finding the theme in literature, so I assume that many people found it as shocking as I did. I find comfort in this for a few moments until I remember that the same is happening nowadays in different scales. There is even the word "witchhunt", but it only carries the meaning of ceaselessly tracking down a certain group of people; it doesn't carry tragedy in its meaning.
The first real-world case that comes to mind is one way too close to home. A few months ago, the Venezuelan Gestapo, SEBIN, learned the location of a group of students who were planning to protest against the government. They went into their homes and arrested them. I've personally heard of stories from victims of torture at their hands and the horrible conditions in which they are "stored". Who knows how many have died.
The two most recent cases of literature where I've found the theme are Release That Witch, a Chinese web novel and Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. Both are fantasy novels. As I was reading the first one, I would get used to the joyous themes until a sudden scene would remind me of the tragedy of it all, and I would spend hours thinking about how tragic it truly was.
Both novels share a similar scene where the narrator displays a very detailed description of the results. In the first one, a character visits the royal capital and finds witches hanged in the central plaza, a rotting stench reaching the noses of every passer-by, and in the second one, the main characters find witches tied to pyres, burnt to a crisp, except for one who remained alive, charred black and agonizing.
I just can't help being sad about this. Those were young women with lives and desires till someone self-righteously decided to end their lives in the name of "the greater cause".
Hmmm, there was not much literature, but this is a freewrite.
I don't allow myself much editing on these.
What do you think of this topic?
Don't forget to leave me a much-appreciated vote and a comment.
Are you aware that many of the people killed for witchcraft both in Europe and America were men? Your writing seems to be assuming it was just women. Witch is a gender neutral term.
Oh, I was not aware that witch was a gender neutral term. I did assume they had murdered many men, but I always took it that women were the vast majority of the victims.
Even if it's gender neutral, the term is obviously applied more to women than men, especially in modern literature where they're called witches and wizards, sorcerers and sorceresses. In Spanish, too, the term is "cacería de brujas" (not 'de brujos'). I subconsciously assign it only to women, but I see where I failed in my assumption. Thank you for the observation.
Even on today's date, there are news from certain stray incidents of real witch hunting... It is not that it has vanished completely from the face of the earth
For reaaall?? D: This is mad! I have to look it up. Damn.

Pushhh! :) You know you're the only bot whose comments I appreciate on my posts.
haha thanks ;)
Why do you appreciate my comments?
Dunno, it seems cute, like you're pushing! Push my little post! And it's also short an minimalist, not like jerrybanfield's (who doesn't comment anymore but before they seemed like he was leaving his Last Will on every post that got a bid).
I prefer no comments, but if you have comments, they'd better be from little pushh :3
Thanks.
I don't like spam, so made my comments minimal, receipt like.
It's still spam whether it's short or not. Steem Bot Tracker now let's people filter for upvote bots that don't comment at all.
That's really painful to hear , people are made to burn alive in the name of witches and the most saddest thing is that the fellow people enjoy one's agony with laughter . Days have changed but still we can find such people in this so called modern civilized era . Good freewrite @cryptosharon
Sometimes I wonder whether society will change sometime, whether acting upon emotions while disregarding ignorance will be discouraged and governments are going to promote adherence to the social contract. I think this is one of the only things keeping me from considering myself a full member of society, knowing that this society we live in is so prone to chaotic atrocities.
I totally agree 100% and loved this post. It is a subject I have always felt very sensitive about, especially because many of these women were natural healers and helpers of other women. Leaders in their communities, owned lands, etc. I especially am sorry for the state of affairs in Venezuela. xx Eagle.
Exactly, it's thoughtless self-brutality perpetrated by society, a hivemind-approved abuse of authority. It makes me queasy to think that this happens every day in many ways and that humans naturally accept and promote this behaviour without thinking. Maybe it's in our genes and is something to combat from within ourselves.
Totally! Makes me sick to my stomach. I am with you 100%. I hope we can get it out of our genes, because something has to change. xx Eagle
Hi,interesting post, ----> "the greater cause".
Witches are fascinating. They used to portray them as with ugly faces and long big noses. Now they're quite pretty.
Nice freewrite post Sharon. :) Always love your writing.
Many decent-looking women were burnt for being "witches", I think. Joan D'Arc (the French Christian schizophrenic revolutionary of the middle ages who thought she could hear the voice of God) was burnt for being a heretic, which is the same sentence that witches were given. She was followed by many people, so I don't think she could've been that repulsive to the eyes.
Nowadays people dream of fantasy and going back to medieval knight stories, but always from the point of view of the mystic unseens. Not the noble-born knights but magic wielding outcast who can somehow save the world too (Harry Potter, who actually turned out to be a noble-born member of the Phoenix Order, some wizarding knights, lol).
The one i'm describing I think they're from children's book stories.
Sad but true! Back in the day, some people just punish people for the sake of it and not really delving into the details and not going through proper trial.
Harry Potter was my childhood favorite!♥
Brava! Here's to more empathy for outsiders!
Have you tried today's prompt? It could be sweeter or stickier. Give syrup a try!
I did not try :( I haven't been doing very well with freewrites recently. I'll see if I get one soon.
I've been hit or miss myself lately. I hope you get back to freewriting soon.
I think that the repercussions of cruelty continue, haunting us from lifetime to lifetime and down through generations, indefinitely, until addressed and healed. Maybe you experienced this first or second hand in another life, or one of your ancestors did and it's stored in your genetic memory? Check out my short anecdote on this topic here, if you like: https://steemit.com/life/@bennettitalia/witches-past-lives-and-recurring-dreams-a-true-story
Thank you for the recommendation. I checked out your story and it's pretty interesting.
It may be the case that my soul has travelled from burnt witches and resented victims of religion up to now. It would make a lot of sense.
Ha yes, I bet there are more than a few with such past life experiences here on Steemit lol!
