This is a really good post but I'm surprised that you didn't mention the most obvious reason to preserve forests: trees are the best, bar none, method to sequester CO2 out of the atmosphere.

I think he meant exactly that by writing
One could have written more precisely that the CO2 is incorporated by diffusing into the stomata of the leaves and then later used to build glucose (C6H12O6) and other organic molecules, but yes, I would say he didn't forget it.
