He never read her letter......
When we go Back in time, When he met Hanna he was 27 springs young. A handsome Guy and a sweethart to have in your corner. He just moved into a New appartement and had a Nice job. When they met at the library. She was 5 years younger and still in University and living with her parents. Not an iDeal situation but that wasnt something he was worried about. She, her name was Hannah, was just glad she was with him very much. After a few months off dating she moved in. Obviously, getting used to each other's habits was difficult in the beginning but they loved Being together. As time passed by, they made an agreement that they would always be honest and always say everything to each other.
No secrets and living a lovely life together. That had been his dream and the way he wanted his relationship to be, honesty always!
Thst one week on Friday, he came home early in the evening because they were going out to eat, at that nice Italian restaurant in their neighborhood.
He put the key in the lock of the front door and shouted that he was home like he always did. It remained quiet, there was a light but Hanna was not there. Weird that you immediately feel that something is not right. So did he. He dropped his bags in the hall. He walked through the hall, to the living room and upstairs to the bedroom. There he saw that the closet Where her clothes used to be was empty, it was open and that there were only empty hangers hanging. It was as if he was playing the leading role in a bad film. He saw that more personal things were gone too. Going back to the living room, he saw that a cupboard from her grandmother was also gonr. An empty spot with discoloration on the wall as a witness.
In the living room there was a letter on the table with his name on it in Hannah's handwriting. He sat down and after 25 minutes he poored himself a whiskey, to think further about what happened that evening, and possibly before that. Why didnt she say anything? He probably spent hours staring at the letter, in which Hannah probably explains why ..... Why she had secretly had disappeared, why in this way. He was broken with grief. He did not deserve this.
The letter remained unopened first on the table later in the cupboard and again later in a drawer of the bookcase. He had decided not to open the letter. Hanna left without reason, He now choose not to know the reason. Respect for yourself is the most important thing and he felt that this did not contribute to that. Family and friends were just as baffled. Wanted to know Why?
But he did not even know that himself. Everyone wanted to know what was in the letter ... the letter was going to control his life! Hannah was still there. She left but still haunted his life.
He made a decision one night and that was the beginning of his new life without Hanna. He burned the letter and decided never to look back and live, live life without Hanna would certainly be just as beautiful .... and Hannah?
WHO IS HANNAH?

Hello @brittandjosie,
LOVE this story...
First, I never learn the main character's name. Intriguing literary tool that I utilized in my first novel...
Second, I especially value the conundrum "does he or doesn't he open the letter?"
Yes, he wants to know what's inside, WHAT IS THE REASON that Hannah departed? And of course, nosy friends & family need to know and cause unnecessary emotional pressure...
I'm glad he chose the torch over the letter opener...
Well done!
Peace and smiles
