Open To Interpretation: "I Was Blind But Now I See" - Words vs Meanings

in #writing7 years ago

When you take all the different meanings of a word into account, think about all of the different ways that you are able to apply each meaning from one word to the next, you start to see more ways than one in which you could interpret such a seemingly "simple" sentence.

I enjoy visiting https://www.etymonline.com to read about words and their origins. It highlights all the ways in which language has flowed throughout history and provides a sense of multiple interpretations which help towards deciphering all kinds of things such as history, relics, art, stories, articles... true meanings.

The more contextual details you have, the more words help guide you towards understanding the correct meanings.

I = a "connective" element in many words formed with Latin or Greek suffixes, an active connective in English. (Or perhaps "eye" meaning beholder, observer)

Was = remain, abide, live, dwell

Blind = dark, enveloped in darkness, obscure; unintelligent, lacking mental perception. The original sense of "blind" was not "sightless" but rather "confused.

But = (positive) aim, goal, end, target / (negative) stump, stock, block

Now = in the present, immediately

See = look, behold; observe, perceive, understand; experience, visit, inspect

Think of some different scenarios of where "I was blind and now I see" has been declared

When using all the different meanings in varied order, you can start to come away from the literal sense of meaning, such as a blind man regaining sight. You can start to think outside the box (structure). For instance it could also mean someone who has been ignorant to something who now has noticed. It could be religious, political, personal... it can relate to many things, all equating to many different outcomes.

In religion it is often presumed one was a sinner, until he found god, then he could see. But what does that mean exactly? He could see, like visually see God? or Jesus? No! It is the motion of seeing a better way to live life, a better way to appreciate what you have and to be compassionate for what others do not.

In politics, that is the same meaning. But "seeing" cannot be confused with a God. Because God isn't the subject. "Seeing" in politics would be seeing the various states of countrywide situations such as healthcare, economy, protection etc.

Spirituality could mean seeing is accepting we are all one, part of the same universe, made and connected of and by the same things, when you "see" it, you feel it, and when you feel things, then you are no longer blind.

Those were just some examples I could think of off the top of my head, I wonder how many possible ways there are to interpret these small set of words.
