I live not for myself but others. When I was younger I made a deal with a devil, for the sake of my sister. I traded my life for hers, but instead of killing me. The devil made me unable to make any decision for myself. My sister quickly learned about my deal, and casted me away. Condemning my actions. Said she would rather be dead, then alive through the means of black magic.
That night she took her own life. That was 30 years ago. Throughout that time, I learned 2 things.
The first thing is that everyone around me will die. Whenever I would join a group, soon they would take a mission to challenge them, or an ambush would happen. No matter what I did they would die. I was with one group for nearly 5 years, I thought the curse may have been lifted partially. I was partially right, as the tanker of the group. I lead them through a windy road, in search of a drake. We say the markings of one, leading off the road. I waited for the command to pursue them. I got the order and followed the footprints, moving quickly down. Taking up the rear was Angy. She was an archer, one of the best I ever found. In front of her was Merlin, his nickname. No one could pronounce his real name, he was our mage. A genius in both defensive and offensive magic, perfectly blending them. The next two were our damage dealers, there was Keith who wielded dual daggers. Made out of the teeth of a dragon we killed a few years back, to complete the duo was Maggie. Who took the role of healer as well. Wielding a spear, with a tri-point. This was a boon from a king, after we saved his kingdom from a hoard of dragons.
The drake should not have been a problem for us. As we moved through the woods, a smell hit us. Rot, we pushed through the wall of rot, and saw a sight we all dreaded. A lich stood tall, hovering above the decaying corpse of the drake. IT STARED AT ME, taunting me, showing me a symbol engraved into its robe. At that point, I knew it was time. Keith shouted at me, to draw their attention. I planted my shield into the ground, a yellow shine spreading through the ground, the Drakes head moved in my direction as it charged me. I braced for an impact that never came. It ignored me, tackling Keith. In one swift motion unnatural for a drake, It sunk its teeth into Keith's shoulder, not before Keith planted his daggers into its skull. As Drake went limp, a black mist emanated from the wound on Keith’s shoulder. The Lich laughed, Keith went limp.
Strings sprouting for his body, pushing out of his back, coating the ground around him in blood. Sending shards of bone throughout the woods. The strings moved to the Lich's hands, as He took control of Keith's body. A grin displayed under his hood, he moved his hands, controlling keith. A slaughter occurred, each attack corrupted the other person. For taking down any one of us was impossible without occurring wounds. They all died, they’re bodies controlled by the Lich. As I stood motionless, they surrounded me. Telling me it was my fault, everything was. I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t cry. I couldn’t run. I couldn't attack them. I COULDN'T”T DO ANYTHING. The Lich ordered me to walk. So I walked.
The second, there seemed to be no escape. I tried going to the priest, only to be cast out, as a devil worshiper. I think this curse had effects on people's minds. I tried not eating, drinking, just walking. It never worked. Eventually something would force me to eat, or to drink, or rest. I couldn’t do anything. There was a time where I was able to briefly forget.
There was a time where I was able to briefly forget. Forget this curse, it was the 10th year. I met someone, who would become the only one to survive this curse. He would also become my only friend. We wrote letters to each other. Keeping our distances, using a complex code. Never talking in public, and only sending these letters once a month. In a hope to stave off the devil. It worked for 20 years. It is the end of the 30th year, his letter never came. I held one of his first letters, enscraled on the front was: in case I can’t write. I sat on the edge of a cliff, a dwarf ordering me to stand guard here, protecting a precious mithril deposit. I flipped the envelope over, on the back written in little lettering was, open me. So I did.
On the inside was his apology. He cursed his foolishness, hated how he wanted to keep this a secret. Not wanting to lose me. I confusingly read the rest. The paper contained tear stains on it. He was crying as he wrote this. His penmanship was shaky, at points the ink was stained crimson. The last words on this side was turn this paper over, and be freed.
I turned the paper over and it was full of commands. From top to bottom, commands telling me to be clean of the curse. Commands, telling me to be freed. Commands telling me to live for myself. Commands telling me to stop being controlled. As I read them, I felt nothing. I scanned the page. The last command was small. Written in blood, it hurt to read. It told me to die…
