With a cutting wrath, the blizzard beat its way through the treetops, striking the ground around Amen as he trekked through the wintry forest to the cabin, hauling a dead weight behind him on an old dog sleigh. It slid easily through the blizzard, much more so than he did, the brute of his tall, muscled body leaving deep bootprints in the snow.
They know.
The thought plagued Amen as he drew nearer to the cabin, the light of day thinning around him. Soon, it would be pitch black, and those within the cabin would be held hostage to the terrors of the night. Wolf packs traveled around these parts, their fur sagging beneath their bellies, hungry, eager to feed. It was indistinguishable to tell the howl of the wolves from the howl of the wind, which shook the trees by their roots, threatening to topple the giants to the ground, plenty of which surrounded the cabin, which had been built from the corpse of trees after a storm similar to this.
But no threat was greater than the human threat within.
Amen knew this all too well. He had seen blood, and he’d enjoyed it.
They know.
Breaking through the thick of trees, Amen stood within the shadows of the cabin, peering through the windows as silhouettes against the bright lights danced within, bodies trapped by the blizzard, making the most of their captivity. Music blared from the house, but even it was no competition for the wind. Those inside didn’t seem to notice. Or maybe they were too liquored up to care.
They should care, because that cabin was full of more than people; it was full of secrets, deadly truths that refused to be spoken. No amount of music, liquor, or optimism could calm the storm outside or the storm that was still to come within.
Amen had seen blood. And he knew that by the end of the night, he’d see it once more.
