I was staying at the Hyatt hotel with my brother and few friends in Dallas for Wrestlemania 32 weekend. After a few days of partying, it was Saturday night and I was going to take easy so that I was well rested for Wrestlemania 32 the next day. My freinds went to the bar with Nasty Boys me and my brother decided to check out the Super Show, which was in the Hyatt Hotel. We showed up after it started and in the middle of match by 2 wrestlers I had never heard of at the time. I wasn't expecting much but my mind was soon blown.
The match was Will Ospreay vs Marty Scrull. I was not familiar with the British wrestling scene. I was expecting low quality wrestling to be honest. What I saw with Will Ospreay was a human highlight reel.
His style is a mixture of lucha but with a bunch of fancy submission holds that you see a lot in the British wrestling scene.
I couldn't find the match that I was at, but here are some Ospreay vs Skrull Highlights.
I am normally of the mind where a good wrestling match is a match that feels like a real fight. I don't like performance art gymnastics.
In 2016, Ospreay vs Richochet was one of the most talked about matches of the year. Here's the full match.
I'm in the camp of Stone Cold. It was more "performance art" than wrestling. Too choreographed and too much planned out in advance. At the same time, it was an athletic spectacle and you could see the potential in both wrestlers, if they just tweaked their styles a bit.
This past week I watched Ospreay wrestle Rey Mysterio. I felt like Ospreay has figured it out. He has struck more of a balance and is getting closer to making it feel like a real fight is happening in the ring. Here are some highlights from that match.
Rey Mysterio's long wrestling career is winding down. This made it an emotional night for the young Ospreay. After the match he cut a promo that left many in the audience in tears. Mysterio gave Ospreay a luchador mask. This is what the wrestling business is all about.
That match was insane. I think you are right, it came off a little more realistic than vs Richochet. Granted, both he and Richochet are so young, that they have plenty of time to figure out the nuances of what makes a match feel more realistic. Talk about athleticism though, those two guys man.
The Richochet match was so fun to watch. I just wouldn't want to see Professional Wrestling go in that direction. over the long run. The wrestlers with a real fighting discipline be it a martial arts background or amateur wrestling know how to make it feel so real. Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle and Ken Shamrock for example just make it feel like a real fight. But with Ospreay, I give him a pass even when it looks really fakey just because he it takes what he does to such an insane level.
