Why Are Telemarketers So Darn Annoying?

in #work5 years ago

Hey JessieMarketers

We now live in a world where most of our communication is done via instant messaging apps with our addition constantly being fed with instant two-way communication. Instant messaging has become a rich media service by incorporating photos, video and voice notes and is now our medium of choice.

So when a call or SMS comes through you take note since it has to be important, its something out of the ordinary. I don't know about other countries but in SA more often than not a call is some poor corporate slave trying to shill you some insurance, live cover, a new mobile phone contract or a host of useless products I dont' need.

People can buy shit on their own time

We have the internet for fuck's sake if I wanted something I'd order it online or go to the store. Your call won't convince me, in fact, it puts me off your business. I realise cold calling works or people wouldn't do it but what I can't accept is telling these companies never to contact me again and yet they continue to do so, this spray and pay approach to get sales is borderline harassment.

No means no

I mean I didn't even keep contacting my ex's when they told me they are not interested so when I tell you I don't want life cover if I get shot, I fucking mean it. Perhaps you need it because you might piss someone off and they shoot you.

As I'm writing this I just hung up on Standard Bank for the 3rd time this week after telling them you're not my type, but this thirst is real. Like I get you gotta pay bills and all but fuck me sideways their has to be a better way.

Saying no doesn't work, adding yourself to do-not-call lists don't work, having call screening apps work to some extent but why should we have this in the first place? I think I may have been more forgiving if it was something I wanted but you literally selling me dog shit for no other reason than you getting a commission at the end of the month.

This is what happens when businesses no longer give a shit about creating value and only about their bottom line. This poor lady and the guy before her that called will probably be out on their assses soon once the company moves to robocalling where they can just piss even more customers off since we don't have a choice but to use their shit banking services.

How do you deal with telemarketers? Do you let them have it? Let them down easily? Just ignore it altogether?

Have your say

Holla at me in the comments! All my commenters I will now refer to as Jessie. Jessie is a good friend of mine, but Jessies got a girl, and I want to make her mine.

So have at it my Jessies! If you don't have something to comment, simply comment "I am a Jessie."

Next time you receive a call, talk really soft in the phone, and when they turn up the volume on their end, yell into the phone as loud as you can.

LOL that one really made me laugh out loud that’s a special kind of savage I love it I’m so trying that next time! Sure I’ll get a call sometime soon to give it a shot and I’ll let you know how it went

I just end the call on them👍

Lol you say you're the no nonsense type. You don't play around? Has there ever been a time they really got to you?

Yes many year's ago one got to me so I hang up the phone and been doing ever since 🤣

I'm trying to be polite on them since I know they are trying to make a living. But after the third time saying no I just must cut them of.

And I'm wondering do this people sell something? They must ... since they are still around. I guess they have more success with the elderly people.

I by no means yell either I’m very polite in-declining but if they don’t listen when I say no I have to cut off! We’re both wasting time on a transaction that’s never going to happen

I’m pretty sure they have about 3-5% success ratio and it’s more than enough to keep this shitty practice profitable they pray on older people and people without education

You can hear from they way the pitch they talk up the benefits and are a bit aggressive that people who aren’t used to it could fall for it easily

Yep this is the case.

I actually HAD that job for half of one summer when I was in college (university.) it was selling b2b products, so not calling people at home but rather interrupting them at work.

I had to stick to a script and even if the potential customer was yelling and cursing, I was expected to respond with the scripted "rebuttal" and "2nd rebuttal." The calls were taped so the manager could coach us periodically.

If you had maybe three days where you didn't make a quota of sales, you got a warning and if you missed it again you were out. I held on for six weeks. First job I was fired from, and (arguably) worst job I ever had.

Glad to be doing something else now, far away from any kind of sales work. And I continue to have a general distrust of salespeople, because motivation is often to close the deal by any means necessary, even if you don't believe in the product and/or have any regard for honesty or ethics. (This is of course a grossly unfair characterization of the large and diverse field of "sales", which includes many great, honest, hard-working people. Just the feeling I took away from the experience.)

Interestingly, the leads (back then they were printed mailing labels) were treated as gold; one manager revealed that the company paid $10k for a small box of them, so even if you got a refusal, you could never just throw them out!

The next summer I had another job in an office, and overheard a colleague taking a marketing call. I could tell by the responses he was giving that it was the exact same script that I had to follow on each call. I told him it was the same snake oil company that fired me the year before, and he hung up (and probably would have anyway.)

My first job after uni was also in sales but I had to go directly to customer and door to door well business to business selling all sorts of corporate branding stuff and I hated it

The pitch sucked and people would tell me they liked me but the prices were bad and I would tell the owner and he just told me to shut up and go make him money, needless to say I didn’t last the probation period of 3 months! After a month I quit I didn’t even bother to ask for my salary for that month I just wanted out

It really is just a spray and pray approach and a numbers game! They churn in and out telemarketers that help churn clients that pay them monthly it really isnt innovative or brings much joy to any one

I think it will slowly get phased out as people continue to find ways to remain private so while the going is good these companies better profit
