"Que saudade", the magical word brings sadness and happiness at the same time, all at once.... A word that claims no direct translation.
I experienced a "doubling" of emotion, walking through the old city by night with a bright and glorious moon, guiding me through the charming streets.
I lived and explored many wonderful places in this world but there are still a few, I wished to visit and one of those was Portugal, especially one of the oldest cities in Europe, Lisboa and its colourful buildings and cafe's.
The historical and fascinating town, full of stories to tell.........
"Saudade is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places, or events that once brought excitement, pleasure, well-being, which now triggers the senses and makes one live again. It was once described as "the love that remains" after someone is gone." - Source Wikipedia
My "longing" and patience, some liquid steem and @steemfest made it possible to finally put my footprints on this interesting town observing its people, buildings and trees..
Saudade is, especially with reference to songs or poetry, a feeling of longing, melancholy or nostalgia that is supposedly characteristic of the Portuguese or Brazilian temperament. It often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return - Source Wikipedia
Can melancholy be a noun and beyond sad?
Being melancholy means that you're overcome in sorrow, wrapped up in sorrowful thoughts.- Source Dictionary
The first time when I heard the sweet word "Saudade" was a few years back when I started an online friendship with a very sweet and interesting young man from Porto. I forgot how we ended up getting in touch but I was there for him to help through a very depressing and difficult time with his girlfriend. Years later we finally met, when he graduated from the Munich university. I was proud of him! He was happy that he overcame his sadness and moved on to fulfil his dreams.
He taught me about the meaning. I knew that one day I would fully understand. Maybe!
The term of saudade comes from the latin "solitatem" which would mean loneliness and isolation, something I can relate to. I generally enjoy socialising but I fall often into a melancholic state of being where I feel very lonely.
It feels like an incompleteness that we unconsciously never want to completely resolve.
The Portuguese term doesn’t have an equivalent in any other language and according to the "Dicionário Houaiss da lingua portuguesa" saudade can relate to the feeling of nostalgia or melancholy, described as such:
“It is related to thinking back on situations of privation due to the absence of someone or something, to move away from a place or thing, or to the absence of a set of particular and desirable experiences and pleasures once lived.” - Source

You have captured the vibe of Lisbon in these photos. There is beauty in these battered and distressed buildings. Once stunning facades now crumbling to dust.
The feeling of melancholy has influenced some of the most poignant works of art in existence. I often associate Marilyn Monroe with melancholy. She was a great and underrated artiste who had to exist in the shadow of her own making.
The music above reflects this feeling of longing beautifully. @mammasita
Such a beautiful and thoughtful feedback! Coming from you it makes it even more special:)
This quote jumped in my mind, remembering my sentiment, wandering the cities streets, stepping on the history, hiding under those tiles and stones.
Hi molometer and mammasitta, I also made a post about it 2 months ago. I think it is a good addition to you post, please check it out :P

I made it on the Azores, far away from Lisbon. The situatuon was ocean and volcanic rock. Only a few thousand inhabitants but mostly the ocean.
Na da Bist Du ja wieder :) Ich freue mich so, dass wir so eine nette Zeit miteinander hatten. I will send you some fun pictures soon and will read your article after finishing my new one.

Du bist echt lieb! Danke mein Lieber 😘😘😘
Beautyful trip!! You captured not only the spirit of the magic word "saudade" but the softness and intimacy of that great ancient city. :)
I've been glad knowing in diferent blogs about steemfest, I hope I'll be there some year!!!
A big hug, and always light and good vibes!! :D
I had to think for a while, how I could report in a little different way what beauty i experienced and include Steemfest, so many others already wrote about. So I taught about this magical word through music and images. I am really happy to read your charming comment.
In your post we can easily see those feelings you've experienced, and yes we can say that you made it with love and trying to put toghether every detail!! Indeed, words, music and pictures make the perfect frame to visit Lisbon and steemfest along with you!!
All the best, @mammasitta, have a good day/night and always good vibes!!! :D
Beautiful post about an amazing word/ feeling. It's also possible to feel "Saudade" of someone or place, when knowing we'll be separated soon. I'm having a great time in Barcelona, but I miss my country, the food...the cheap coffees...and so on! Hope you enjoyed Portugal!
I know that you are the one understanding the meaning of such special word in your mother language. It was beyond great meeting you!
I will be back to Portugal soonest.....
For you !!
Brazil, Bahia must be next for me :)
You were the first one I find/met on Steemfest, and was great! You know how to live life and are a great inspiration!
Thanks for the music, didn't know it. Hope you can visit us again, but I easily imagine you loving Brazil more than Portugal, they live happier lives (I think). We can do it too but in a different and contained way... :)
Ohhhhh you are so sweet! Que linda!!! :) I be back to Portugal and will travel the whole country the next time. Glad you enjoyed this music. Every country has its own charm and vibrations. I didn't meet enough people this time to feel the real Portuguese temperament. I guess it was a bit too cold hahahaha.....
Where in Bahia are you planning to go? There are so many places... And when? I would choose Carnival time!!! :))
But, then, you may never go back home... ;)
Itacare and Barre Grande! I am an agent for 3 properties, I help renting there. I really would love to go
If you manage to go to Barra Grande and Itacaré don't forget to visit Morro de São Paulo! And let me know when you are in Brazil! :)
I plan for next year but not sure yet since I need to take care if my 94 years young mother first.
Sure!!! Of course... If you need info from Bahia (or Brazil) before your trip just whatsapp me (+55.11.9.8955.9608).
It is amazing that that painting of the individual (woman?) reading in the window was done in 1899. it has such a modern flair to it, truely one very timeless piece.
The song, and guitar work was amazing, I really liked it.
Such a wonderful golden esk post all starting with a word that has the partial meaning of "privation due to the absence of someone or something", It seems to me that more has been found than was ever lost in life.
The photo's are great, carrying on that golden glow and feel good sort of feeling. I really liked the "Fox with Pig shoes tile photo. It along with the entire post made me smile, but that picture started the smiling.
Sounds like you had a lot of fun at steemfest, maybe one day my wife and I will make it to one.
Its amazing that you noticed those interesting details. It was not easy to pack up so many photos( I still have tons of them) in one meaningful content. I fell in love with the vibes of Lisboa and for sure will be back when the weather is a bit nicer to hang in those charming cafes and walk around without the bipolar weather with sunshine and rain at the same time......SAUDADE! I hope to see you for the next fest!
Beautiful post @mammasitta you captured the crumbling yet captivating essence of Lisbon in your pictures and it's beautiful yet powerful spirit in your words. Thank you for sharing :)
I am so happy to read your lovely comment and understanding of the meaning of my article:) Nice to meet you!
Likewise @mammasitta and no problem at all. The city will always hold a special place in my heart and you perfectly captured the profound sense of history that pervades it's ancient cobbled streets and crumbling buildings.
Was waiting on your post @mammasitta glad you liked being in my country what a beautiful post. I already have saudades of being there with everybody.Next steemfest in Brazil I say lol.
Saudade saudade and more saudade 🤗🤗🤗
Few times I have seen, heard or read so magnificent descriptions/translations of "saudade"... Your post brought me back the "scent" of Lisboa, mix of flowers, seafood, perfums, gastronomic challenges...
One thing is certain: you will be full of "saudade" after visiting Bahia :)
You described that feeling I had in Lisbon so well. I could imagine to have a little flat there for a while and just get lost in the scents of the city.
Beauty on both sides of the lense always with you.
