In my experience, it helps when cutting plywood or any type of manufactured board. Taping keeps it from splintering and tearouts from happening. We would also always turn the finished side down

Tape can't stop a dull blade from ripping up a piece of wood... It will, though, keep the splinters from shooting all over, and depending on how dull the blade is, it may stop the tear-outs. It all really depends on how dull the blade is. I did a job with Brazilian Cherry, and once that blade got dull there is no way to keep that wood from splintering.
