I know I might get a bit of slack for this post and competition. And I may ruffle a few feathers with this hashtag. Men & even some women will most likely come along and say "Oooh this is so sexist! Why don't men have a comp and hashtag exploring their side of the story.
To them I say.. Go for it. There is nothing stopping you from emasculating a #tag for any purpose you wish.
This is a decentralized system isn't it?
To take a quote from Snoop Dogg: Being a woman ain't easy!
Woman face challenges in our patriarichal society. Of course, we have taken great strides in the past century to provide equality to woman but still there are many places in the world that woman's rights are abused.
- Did you know in the Vatican City woman are still not allowed to vote!?
- Over 60% of woman in India suffer from some form of domestic violence?
- Literacy rates for women in Yemen are lower than 35%?
- Just 25% of woman in Nepal get any form of higher education?
- Over 60% of woman in Peru have suffered some form of physical abuse?
- Under 30% of Turkish woman are employed?
- Afghan woman get thrown in jail for running from their husbands?
- Even in America, women cannot travel alone without verbal street harasment.
So what is #womenofsteemit all about?
...and did you mention rewards? I like those!
The #womenofsteemit will start off as a #tag, documenting woman on Steemit's lives. A combination of a photography project as well as to create an exhaustive catalog of the females of Steem!
Once a week, most likely on a Monday, I will compile the best few stories and images and present to Steemit the #womenofsteemit weekly roundup as a nice showcase.
Those featured will share the Steem dollar rewards the showcase post receives plus whatever amount of SD has been donated to the pot that week!

I had just taken a few days off from work, and my boyfriend surpised me by saying we going on a week trip down the coast. We pulled over at this spot because I needed a wee really bad and there was a place hidden with bushes. Oh so tuff being a woman! :P I was so happy to be able to bring my doggie with for the holiday. We ended up having an awesome week visiting family and seing some new parts of South Africa I had never experienced before!

Thank you for the submission. What a cool effect you got with those images. I think sometimes we forget how real photo's are really made rather than snapping a pic with an iphone and applying a filter. Some great art and an awesome story! thanks so much for sharing it.
Yeah it's a totally different thing, even using a normal film camera makes you pause and decide what is actually work taking a picture of. Nowadays we're so used to just snapping a million pics and choosing the best one it's become much less special I guess. When I was a teenager no one carried a camera around, basically only if it was a special occasion!
Digital gives us a new kind of freedom to experiment for less time and money though so I'm not dissing it or anything!

This is a wonderful idea and I would love to enter :)
However I don't have any pictures that will directly tell a story. I have had a lot of experiences and struggles that might be interesting and although some of them are sad - many of them end on a positive note. I could create artwork to go along with the story - but I understand how seeing the face behind the story is particularly important to this showcase!

THIS IS SO TRUE. and the US certainly doesn't have even nearly the worst of it. I live in Mexico City, and my boyfriend's parents told me not to ride the metro in shorts. SHORTS?!?! It's hot out! Then I discovered there is a car on the metro designated for just women and children and elderly. If that doesn't immediately say there's a problem, I don't know what does. I hope the day comes when that car won't be necessary, and things like this are the steps that help! <3
it is such a weird juncture!!! Like, on one hand, it's really nice there is a car(in some practical sense)! On the other hand, like you said the fact that there NEEDS to be a car is kind of horrifying. I wish there was a word for this, where it brings up this great question of
How far down the line do we go in trying to 'solve the problem'?
I mean it's totally a thing in almost any shared endeavor, if you scope the problem too big, it might be completely intractable and people get disheartened and burnt out trying to change something that doesn't want to change.
If you scope the problem too small, you're just constantly fending off new symptoms that crop up, and never dealing with the root of 'the problem'.
I hope the day comes when it's not necessary too Jess.
