I think we are all guilty of thinking that way...they just magically appear and run themselves in our minds.
We rarely take the time to figure out what goes into developing and maintaining them.

Yes, but it's something automatic, it's like anything else, like whoever created the chair you wear, or the shoes you're wearing, it's something you do not stop to think about.
