So here is a quick update of how the Steem Witness system works.
I've been tracking how many people get blocks and how that is spread over Steem Witnesses.
There are 200+ witnesses in the queue, perhaps thousands, at least many more than 200.
In the last day or so, only 84 got a block.
This is the distribution:
These are numbers collected by my witness in the last day and a bit, listing who got how many blocks and how many people got to get a share.
Sobering..... considering it costs real money to be a witness, $50 and up a month including many hours of time.

took aggroed a year, but now he's in the top 20....
keep in mind many witnesses drop out due to added responsibilities, or other life changes (one can only guess), so... if you are patient, have a heart of gold, and work your butt off you might get a slice of that pie someday
" .....if you are patient, have a heart of gold, and work your butt off you might get a slice of that pie someday.."
That should be at the top of every guide on how to become a witness. My feeling is that rewards should not be a 92/7 oligarch split. Even the evil Pareto distribution would be better. (80/20)
What kind of community hands out 93% of the money available for a task to the top 5% of those available for work? The answer is: a feudal society.
Welcome to steemit. I see you are new here, let me know if I can help.

Well, actually looks like I'm a bit newer than you. Let me know also any good information you can pass my way.
Will do.
This is useful information, though I object to the term "oligarchs".
Perhaps (or likely imo) as user base increases, so will the number of witnesses.

See above post and timcliffs weekly reports for a deeper idea of what our top witnesses do. Much of which is based out of belief in this platform and willingness to help, out of the goodness of their hearts.
Quite a bit more to being a witness than running a server.
What do you think @banjo?
I don't know, you're a peanut.
Will you ever be witness?
I don't think so.
