Skiing at Lake Louise

in #winter7 years ago

Lake Louise Ski Resort near Banff, Alberta offers breathtaking views of the Canadian Rockies. It is located within Banff National Park, which is a large wilderness area west of Calgary, Alberta. Elevation at the resort ranges from 1650m at the base to 2640m at the summit for a vertical drop of just under 1000m. The resort does not have an extensive village area at its base, but there are several hotels nearby with regular shuttles. Personally, I like to walk from my accommodation to the skiing, but others prefer the lack of extensive commercial development.

In this post, I share several photos taken on a recent trip to Lake Louise. Some of these shots were taken with a GoPro Hero3+ mounted on a helmet. The GoPro takes excellent photos. I like the fish-eye effect of the wide-angle lens in the mountain environment.

This is the Ptarmigan Quad Chair. Considering the GoPro was snapping a random photo every 10 seconds, I think these are amazing shots -- framed perfectly.

Paradise Bowl is a wide open bowl area. If you like skiing moguls, this truly is paradise.

I believe this peak is the highest elevation at the resort. It is accessible via the Summit Platter which is a fairly extreme ride on a windy day. We are headed in that direction here.

It was cold and windy at the summit! My hand almost fell off taking this selfie. My iPhone died from the cold moments after taking this shot.

By Lake Louise standards, this was not a big year for snow. Nevertheless, the avalanche hazard was real. Nice mountains in the background, BTW.

And finally, here is one of the few shots you will ever see of me on Steemit ( ... I am nocturnal and shy like the red panda).

Woh...beautiful pics. I was there in September last year with my family. We all loved it, especially the color of the lake . Would love to go back some day.

That place looks incredible, when will the snow finally arrive in Europe? I miss skiing ...

At lower level it seems we can ride in woods too ? I love backcountry snowboarding :) getting old makes me ride backcountry rather than playing at parks :)

Yes, the tree line is at about 2300 m which is about 2/3 up the mountain, so lots of glades. Generally, not my thing (I want to live), but if you're into that, Lake Louise has it.

Hey I liked your post! would be nice if you checked out mine too about traveling to northern Norway! :)

Omg, that looks absolutely amazing. I haven't been to Banff yet but now it'll have to be the next place to go to. How does Banff's skiing/snowboarding compare to Whistler? I'll be heading over to Whistler next month.

Well, I'm going to say Whistler has the best skiing/snowboarding in Canada (in my opinion). Bigger mountain, more runs, and better atmosphere. As for scenery, Banff trumps Whistler.

Ahh good to know! Maybe Banff will be better for camping. I can only imagine how beautiful it would be to wake up to the beauties of mother nature. Thanks opaulo!

Ah, this post has got me wanting to go snowboarding again! True story, I learned to snowboard in the middle of the summer! It was when I spent a summer in Mt. Hood National Park. I went partially just to get away from the city, but to also study the geology of the area. Mt. Hood is the only place in the lower 48 you can go skiing in the summer time! Great shots :)

ahhhh lake louise! went there a week after opening and caught a big powder day! follow me back, i am doing the season in fernie and will have lots of winter and snowboarding/ski related posts up! peace! jojoguo :D great post!
