Zinfandel is a thin-skinned red varietal native to the Dalmatian province of Croatia. Long considered 'America's vine and wine', Zinfandel didn't technically find its way to the United States until the mid 19th century when it became California's most widely planted varietal (much of it removed during prohibition). Zinfandel produces a robust red wine that varies in flavor depending on the area in which it is grown.

Start the day in the middle of the Oak Knoll District at the relaxed Robert Biale Vineyards. The Biale Family has been growing Zinfandel grapes since the 1930’s and produces some of Napa's best in small lots and in a classic style. Vistas from the porch are worth noting.

Work your way back toward Highway 29 via Oak Knoll Avenue and head north to Yountville. Girard's handsome tasting room sits at the north end of town and offers a large selection of varietals without an appointment. This thirty-year-old winery produces a well-balanced, powerful old vine Zinfandel that merits a stop on the trail. Enjoy their large street side deck if available.

Continue north to Rutherford Road and cross the floor to the Silverado Trail, make a left and continue north to The Terraces. The Terraces is a hillside vineyard nestled within an old stone quarry and the producer of spicy, terroir driven small lot Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. Allocate 90 minutes for a unique experience that includes a ride through the vines.

Finally stop, Outpost. As the name implies, this extraordinary Howell Mountain top winery is up and away from the congestion of the valley floor. The winery’s exceptional mountain fruit Zinfandel can be enjoyed while gazing at a spectacular vistas of the valley below.

Dine at Press in St. Helena (707) 967-0550.

Winery Option: Frog's Leap
