My recipe for the sparkling wine is stupid simple.
Grape Juice with no preservatives (5 gallons for $32ish USD)
1 package of wine yeast ($1.35 USD for a pack that can do up to 6 gallons)
10 cups of sugar (maybe $5 USD)
Put the grape juice into a container to ferment and keep clean
Add yeast and sugar
Let sit a few weeks
-- brew bucket and air trap - somewhere with consistent temperature and not too hot or too cold (I've got mine sitting in a glass bottle in my basement on concrete)
Then something to store the finished product in. Plastic bottles, glass bottles, I use $35 USD reusable 5 gallon soda kegs.
Vent periodically to keep them from building too much pressure.
You can get going with very little equipment. You need a brewing vessel, like a brew bucket, hydrometer, heating belt, and an air trap. Then you need the water, yeast and a beer kit. Optionally brewers sugar. You can ferment the batch within a week or so, and once it's settled, add finings to pull the sedminent out of the beer. Then decant it into presure resistant bottles like lemonade/ coke bottles, and open one every friday for a couple of months! You would need the appropriate cleaning materials to keep the stuff sanitary. But this is the barebones of brewing your own stuff, which tastes nice. Anything more than that adds quality and complexity.
