THE WILD-MAN'S WILD FRIENDS - EPISODE 8 - RED EARED SLIDER

in #wild-man7 years ago

This is one of the most popular turtles in the world!

The Red Eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) is a striking and beautiful species. It is common throughout South-Eastern United States, but has invaded many places around the world, including South Africa, Australia, and Europe. Because of it's extreme popularity in the pet trade, it has been shipped all around the world. When pet owners grow tired of them and release them into the wild, they can quickly become an invasive species.

These turtles are omnivores, and will eat fish, worms, frogs & carrion (dead animals) as well as vegetation. They are a mostly aquatic turtle that can often be seen sunning themselves on logs and rocks, since they are cold-blooded reptiles.

Little turtles like this were once the rage in the pet trade. However, since young turtles under 4 inches in length can carry salmonella, pet shops no longer carry the baby turtles. Though the beautiful shells may eventually become covered in moss, they can still be recognized by their beautiful red "ears" on each side of their head.

The information is the video is original but I did have a quick refresher from this source.

I have always loved turtles. They bring me so much joy! Been a bit down in the dumps recently. Talked about it in my most recent post. Maybe you'd give it a read?

so many turtles, there's diversity where you at.

I like those fellows especially the little one ;) "they can quickly become an invasive species." Let me say good for them it means they would survive :)
Good work and I like photos.

Those things are so delicious.

I guess I should have posted it in #foraging too!

Do you mind sharing how you prepare them? What do they taste like? Thanks :)

Love the red ears. One of the Drs offices i work with had one in a tiny tank so i offered to take it and put it in my koi pond. Seems like a great idea right? No good deed goes unpunished as it ate all my fish haha. Luckily they were all small and inexpensive. I kept him for a couple months and put little feeders in there so he would be able to swim and catch them and then I let him go in the big lake down the road. It's nice having again but I miss the little tyke.

@papa-pepper Nice post as usual sir. I miss the turtle we used to have around in NY. I just don't miss NY haha. I love to come here to see what you got on all these animals that I don;t have around anymore. Thank you Sir!

OMG! That turtle is so cute. I get to see a lot of the endangered Olive Ridley turtles. They are quite big in size and we see hundreds nested along the coast. I watched a Ridley dig deep in the sand for more than two hours to lay eggs. Fascinating!

really good!!:))

They are cool little pets! Had two when I was a kid. We released them into the wild and went to check on them periodically. Cool Post!

Never had one of these, but I have always appreciated them. Happy to bring back the memories for you!

wooow AMAZING
mothernature love it

I got one of those when I was a wee little tyke.

You are not the first to say that. Thanks @artwatch!

The turtle is cute but scared of the snek.

Yeah, snakes can do that to people.

I LIKE TURTLES! 🐢

cute turtle. I used to live in farm when I was a kid and there were just so many turtles everywhere.

nice post! upvoted! :) have a good one :)

Ive never seen one of those on our homestead. Found a box turtle the other day. You get all the cool stuff on camera...like an animal whisperer or something. LoL. Sent you a steemitchat message.

Cool, I'll check it out!

Got it, messaged back.

Loving these, keep it up! I mentioned Arkansas in my introduction post and may have to write about the Ouachitas and Ozarks now!

I just had a painted turtle visit this evening while I was checking on the pool. Their coloration does look a bit similar. Have you ever seen/captured a Blandings Turtle? Apparently they are somewhat rare in Michigan but we have a bunch of them that live in our marsh on the Homestead and lay eggs up by the house every spring/summer. Thanks.

And I think your gonna be acting out in Man vs Wild pretty soon :D Those are beautiful turte and this shell is colored like a oil pastel. Nice work sir @papa-pepper I love your wild life works so just continue with it.

YAS! lol damn right in the kisser!

We bought 2 redeared turtles the size of a quarter from a flea market yrs ago. Then my daughter found a baby snapping turtle in the road. So they all shared a turtle pond I made on the back lanai. They grew very large(larger than in this pic.) When I had to leave my house forever, they moved into an awesome lake full of turtles up in Tampa at Carrollwood station apts. I was back twice to visit them. I put a different mark on each of their shells. They are happy as hell there! Which makes me happy.

I just watch the wedding of Pam and Jim on the Office. Dwight gave them a turtle pot and turtle bibs, maybe he was on to population control.

Nice post, l like it. Because when i was young i have turtle in our back yard. @papa-pepper thanks for the post remembering the old this

Thanks for sharing these adorble turtles!

Still going strong doing your thang. Great stuff buddy!

How do you pose with snakes? It looks a little scary. I love snakes but I don't think I have the courage to lift them up and take a selifie :P I love your post about the Red eared Slider! Always happy to read your posts! :) Upvoted :) Have a nice day! :)

The red eared slider...the bane of herpetologists everywhere!

Hey, I'm buried these days. Did you ever send that quote from winning the game or the photo? Season 3 is about to end!

Oh man, thanks for the reminder @papa-pepper!

Lol, I'll go with this image since it's probably the most recent and really showcases that glorious beard length (and has a creeper llama in the background).
As for a statement, hmm....
"The opportunity to connect with the community and make a little money all while playing a game is exactly the kind of creativity steemit seems to strive for. We see what I like to call the three "F's": friends, funds and fun! (And getting your wife murdered by forest snipers is secretly hilarious!"

I had to laugh. Looking at your thumbnail, those sliders look like hamburger sliders. I half thought you might be eating those things, lol!

I had a red slider as a pet for years and years. "Turtle baby". I took it all over the place as I moved around a lot during my late teens and 20s.

good posting,very interesting

we call those Red-eared Terrapins in the uk

I feel like you have way more things in Arkansas than I though you had!

i can't remember how many i went thru as a kid - i had a talent for losing them 😉

Nice turtles, happy they live in the wild!

the snakes are a little bit scary though, but really nice photos.

I wonder if you used them as frisbees, like the way you are holding them in the first pic!

@papa-pepper v nice upvoted and following

resteemed :)

They're also really popular here in China, and unfortunately I've yet to see one actually survive ownership more than a few days. People just have noooo idea what to do with them, other than pour water in a glass bowl. Sigh.

Are all these critters on your homestead ?

You'd give Steve Irwin a run for his money (if he was still around!!!)

How interesting. A wonderful post.

Cool. Man where do you find all these creatures? Neat to learn some about them.

It really is a beautiful little creature.
