Arbitrage scams are carried out on the hive network. The victims are instructed to send Hive coins to an address and are promised to receive returns. Some coins may be sent back to the victim initially to make it appear as if the scheme is working. Later, the returns stop coming, and more funds may be requested to resolve issues preventing payment. This is the general script of the scam.
Victims of this scam do not need a hive account—the instructions state to send directly from a centralized exchange to the deposit address.
Deposit accounts are often created using names that resemble those of a well-known exchange or that appear to be an "official" account. For example, the name may contain the word "hive," the name of a well-known centralized exchange, or a combination of both.
Example of Instructions Given to Victim
- Go to the trading tab and select the HIVE coin, then select (market order), buy the coin.
- Go to the ASSETS tab, select DEPOSIT and find the STEEM coin. Copy its ADDRESS and TAG.
- Return to the ASSETS tab, go to WITHDRAWAL, select the HIVE coin (check that the HIVE network is selected), then insert the STEEM coin address that we copied, now insert the TAG. Select all HIVE coins.
- Confirm the withdrawal✅
- Wait until the funds are credited back to you in the STEEM coin.
- Sell our STEEM coin and receive net profit😉
