太极拳则不然,太极拳是不以肌肉运动为主来促进心肺功能的真正的有氧运动。虽然静功和动功的练习都有肌肉的参与,但是强调“用意不用力”的太极拳,肌肉运动强度很小,尤其静功,在身体完全不动,双腿并不下蹲受力的情况,仅仅以站桩要领为核心,通过对自然站姿微小的调整与呼吸心法的改变,就可以使心肺功能进入有氧运动的状态,如心跳增速在每分钟20下左右,呼吸变得深长,每分钟2-5次呼吸,血液循环充沛,新陈代谢加速。由于全身肌肉在松弛状态下耗氧并不大,于是人所有内在器官,都得到了比平常充沛的多的氧气供应和能量补给。
