So today I spent the day analyzing the way that Mana works in both Steem and Whaleshares.

My Steem alt account that I used had 6.1 SP and my Whaleshares account has .010 Whalestake. From a newbie perspective, it is clear that my ability to do anything on Steem runs out after about 40 minutes of engaging, while I am free to comment and engage with users as much as I like on Whaleshares.

With 6.1 SP, I was given 15 comments (posts and comments on steem are called "comments"). So, after engaging less than an hour, I was left with being locked out of Steem, due to running out of Mana. Every action on Steem reduces one's Mana: commenting, posting, voting, sending memos and transactions. Also interesting to learn that after I made several votes, the number of comments I could make went down too. This means that all activities are treated equally, and doing a lot of one activity reduces one's other activities. My vote is worth $0 in Steem.

In Whaleshares where I started out with .010 Whalestake, I was able to freely comment and post without using up my Mana. Mana is not affected at all by commenting. My Mana was affected by voting on other people's posts, so even if I ran out of Mana by voting too much, I could still comment to my heart's desire. So, I could have in theory spent many many hours on Whaleshares, even if I had used up my Mana with voting, since commenting doesn't affect Mana at all. My vote is worth .01 in Whaleshares.

Psychological Effects of These Two Systems: Cognitive Load

When new users experience a set of thoughts which revolve around restricted actions, and thinking too much about their social behavior/interaction it's called cognitive load. Cognitive load exists when you have to weigh your future actions, and make decisions about what to do. So, in Steem, due to the Mana restrictions on commenting, it adds significant cognitive load, and pressure onto a social activity that should be without such a load. Commenting and socializing and making friends is something that should feel free and easy. If not, people will begin holding back their natural social behaviors, or most likely, they won't even bother logging in due to the existence of this cognitive load.

On Whaleshares, I feel much freer to be myself, and to be social. I don't know if it will stay this way forever, but I can say with certainty that the brand new users are fairly miserable on Steem due to these Mana restrictions and excessive cognitive load.

The weirdest thing about this situation is that it would be easy to fix this in Steem. All it would take is awareness and a desire to make user experience the #1 priority.

If you’re a new user or have less than 15 SP please comment below about your experiences with Mana and how it’s currently impacting you.

Hello, I found you via a search about ono the invitation code. Your steemit post of about 4 months ago was found. More about that later. I was lucky enough to find Whaleshares and had a bts account in place with 1 whaleshares token gained long enough ago via an introduction class on their use for steemit upvotes. So had the minimum stuff needed duing the snapshot. Anyway, was one of the lucky ones that was able to create account in the first wave. Exciting times watching trading activity of WLS. I have powered up steem earned over the last year so can't speak to the 15 SP experiance. I will say that I have had to make a considerable adjustment to autovotes given. Was not taking many votes at all to drop down to the 30% range. Your post here helped me to understand why.
Back to ono.. are you still involved with that project? It appears to be very good what I have read so far. Per the android app there appear to be a few ways to get an invitation code. Seems to depend on level of volenteer help I am willing to give. I don't know much about coding but could use the network and write about what I like and do not like. Do you recommend any path to becoming active on ono? Thank you in advance for taking the time to give me a reply.

Doesn't the new system on Steem benefit those that power up? It seems like it incentivizes you to hold your SP or buy Steem, instead of powering down to sell. I only have 307SP, and I have been a lot more active and engaging lately. I have yet to run out of MANA.

I am still waiting for my WS confirmation, so, I cannot compare them for myself quite yet. I am on Smoke.io and Weku and those seem to be ok as far as engagement, but, I just got on those two as well.

I will probably always love Steemit because it was the first, even if it has these speed bumps every now and again. I mean, I won't throw my kids away because they frustrate me either.

Thanks for the analysis. Steem on!

I have plenty of steem power and therefore Resource Credit so I can do as much as I want on here. But in some games I play, Mana is limited and you can only cast spells every so often. This paradoxically maybe, draws me too continue to play the game. Same with Bitcoin and POS faucets. You can only collect once an hour and it's a really tiny amount, but I find myself going back and collecting when the timer says I can.

This is a new change on steemit so we'll have to see what happens. I think the idea was to limit spam and I think it's actually a good idea to limit interaction of newbies until they read some articles and come to understand a little bit about steemit before they jump in and start engaging. I think this change has potential. Let's see what happens!

I guess it comes down to this: right now a lot of little people feel completely disregarded and if it’s a pay to play model I’m not sure that’s a good thing for future growth.

Posted using Partiko iOS

I really don't think it is now or will become a pay-to-play model. I think it's a, come in and look around and interact a little as you get to know the place, kind of model. But we'll see, it's only a week old! 👍😎

So the community is going to split ?

No, people are free to go where they want and expect many more clones like Whaleshares and Weku to pop. The same thing happens with Bitcoin with over 70 hard forks and no one use them.

The engagement on Whaleshares is nearly the same as on here despite the fact that the user base is tiny..

Posted using Partiko iOS

No. Most people on Whaleshares still post on Steem. Whaleshares is a fork of Steem and has a different vibe. It’s more community oriented plus there are no bidbots right now. It’s similar to the early days in Steem where the focus was in interaction

Posted using Partiko iOS

Steam will split I do not know what will happen in the near future
The image of the sad dog is really painful

There’s already a number of Steem forks: smoke.io, Weku, Whaleshares, Scorum Golos... forking is like evolution

Posted using Partiko iOS

so sending memo's will also decrease mana ? thankGod lol now i wont get memos from idiots spammers send and get vote etc etc 😂

btw Good Analysis

15 actions per day for 6 SP account seems pretty reasonable to me... considering every new account gets +15 SP as default..

Whaleshares is separate blockchain than Steem?

Yes it’s an entirely separate blockchain

Here is the Whaleshares block explorer: https://whaleshares.io/whalesharesexplorer/

Hi @stellabelle I miss you program 😄

Posted using Partiko Android

I’m thinking how my next one will work, need some time to get organized

Posted using Partiko iOS

How is the load diference between Whaleshares and Steem?

I would guess Steem uses more bandwidth, so that is more expensive.

I’m not sure what you are referring to “load difference”. I don’t have the answer as far as a technical one

Posted using Partiko iOS

load difference = amont of traffic on steem compared to Whaleshares.

@stellabelle nice analysis but I think your analysis was based on frustration and the unplesant experience you had with steem.

Steem is in no way restricting anyone from going about their daily activities on its platform, its only instilling the respect it deserved a long time ago now...forks are upgrades.. Yes i agree but it can never be like the original product itself

Besides steem had to do this to prevent spam and instill discipline in its users....sp has always been said to be a measure to determine how much influence you can have in the community

If you want to comment 100-200 times a day.. Then you have to power up... Its as simple as that... I know this will affect a lot of newbies but still it was a decision for the greater good and i respect it... Even though it has a negative effect on me

I love the new system, it gives more incentive to hold my steem and not power down...just my honest opinion☺

Actually I experienced zero issues with Mana, but it seems that many of the participants in my Banana Program did, and this is why I began to dig into researching what’s going on.

Posted using Partiko iOS

Oh oh... Ok now i get it
But still,we would have to either choose between dumping steem or adopting to the new upgrades by either powering up or being content with the rc allocation...its a really hard choice...i would rather still love to stick to steem tho.
What is your banana program all about... Maybe i will be intrested in it☺

Something tell me after the storm the price of steem will go up as more people will want to acquire and power up. No system is perfect but this isn't all bad.

That is really weird... I comment like crazy and my Mana seems to stay the same.... only effected by voting more than 10 times a day at 100%

Posted using Partiko iOS

Really? That’s weird. Anyone who has more SP isn’t affected so maybe that’s why?

Posted using Partiko iOS

But you have way more SP than me

Posted using Partiko iOS

I signed up for Whaleshares ....but it looks like it will take a long time to join

Posted using Partiko iOS

Ahhhh your Bitshares account... do you have it?

Posted using Partiko iOS

I do but problems opening on Chrome ?

Posted using Partiko iOS

There will probably be an infinite # of Steemit Clones ..... onkybthe very best will survive. I am pretty sure that The Spammy ones will die a quick death.

Posted using Partiko iOS

The fact that there are many Steem clones means we are into something big!

Posted using Partiko Android

Yeah it does mean something!

Posted using Partiko iOS

Will Partiko work with Whaleshares ?

Posted using Partiko iOS

I don’t know. I guess if it got popular anything is possible

Posted using Partiko iOS

Is whaleshares the Steemit 2.0 everybody was talking about?

Posted using Partiko iOS

No. Dan Larimer is creating another social network on EOS, and that one is described as Steemit 2.0

Posted using Partiko iOS

So whale shares is its own shit-chain or just a website? lol
