So I've been on Steemit for a few days now and have spent a fair bit of time going through the posts of the so called Whales of Steemit. I know they have lots of followers because they were the early adopters of this platform but the amount of money they're making is insane and that too for posts that just seem to be too long and without any actual content to read.
I've tried to read a few posts of the highest earners of Steemit but just after the top 3-4 lines I always seem to lose interest .To me it seems like they're just copying and pasting paragraphs from some website or blog that they come across. I can't imagine them typing all that content on their laptops or PC's. And since there's no checks in place to stop plagiarism here, I think they're making money using somebody else's work.
What's your thoughts on this?
Do you think Steemit need to address this issue if it wants to compete with Youtube in the future?
There is a bot that is suppose to take care of plagiarism. See this post https://steemit.com/steemitabuse/@cheetah/cheetah-bot-explained
You raised a good point here. I was wondering this myself. Some posts just seem unnecessarily long.
In fairness, there are two bots which do a plagiarism check: Cheetah and Steemcleaners.
I know that the Curie guild also checks for plagiarism before upvoting anything submitted their direction for consideration.
There are also some individuals on Steemit who verify things are not plagiarized, I know @pfunk is one of them.
From my own experience, plagiarism is one thing the community takes very seriously, so I would have to say that may be an unfair accusation. Quality of the post is a subjective assessment. Do I like all the content which earns top dollar? No. However, they have invested time and energy building their following and those individuals do find value in the content they have created. If anything, I would suggest taking that page from their playbook.
Thanks for clarifying on the plagiarism aspect. But content that goes on and on an on and it has like so many upvotes just doesn't make sense to me. Nothing against them for posting such long content but seems to be lacking that punch which can explain the whole scenario in just a few paragraphs. But yeah definitely something to learn from their playbook on how to get so many followers.
