Pain of the Past

in #weekendfreewrite7 years ago

This is my first free write for Steemit! I used to write a lot when I was younger and I'm happy to be getting back to it! It's been a few years since I've written anything non-academic, and it felt damn good to let the creativity flow.

This entry is for part 1 of the #weekendfreewrite challenge by @mariannewest

Michael sat down in the middle of the road and began to cry. Tears burned his eyes as he flashed back to two years prior. It was that day that broke his spirit and muddled his dreams. Two years ago that day, Michael lost his Lizzie.

He still remembers the evening painfully well for they were celebrating his 32nd birthday. Lizzie surprised Mike with tickets to a local comedian and they were excited for an evening on the town. Flurries began to flutter from the drab sky as he drove into the city. He still remembers her eyes glistening at the sight of the lights and the way her nose wrinkled as she laughed. Michael was having the best birthday of his life, but like all evenings, they had to come to an end.

After the show had finished Michael and Lizzie climbed back into their car and began to travel home. They had a 45 minute drive from the city and snow was falling fast. Michael hit a slick spot and the car began to careen down the road. Before he had time to react, an oncoming car slammed into the passenger side of the car.

Mike let out a sob reliving the pain. It felt so real. He felt so responsible.
