RE: archive.org - the wayback machine for websites

in #web7 years ago

how can this be used with steemit?
thank u for sharing and for taking the time to answer my question

Sort:

No, this site it's just a database saves from some specific websites ( well known ) their xcode ( it's mean the origine code or file.html ) and put it in archive.org
in some sort, it just take images of the site and store it, until someone want an old version of the website ( sometimes to download something, the owner of the website took it away from the new version, but when you use archive.org to go back to the old version, you may have the possibility to download it )
so it can't be helpful in case someone took down steemit ( or hacked if this what you mean )

PS : try this url to see steemit on 18/08/2016 http://web.archive.org/web/20160818023804/https://steemit.com/

==> It just gives you the possibility to see the past, not to change it

I hoop i did answer your question, because i'm just a beginner programmer so you may find someone else who can explain this for you better than me

does this mean that if Steemit crashes for whatever reason, someone in theory will be able to run the program from this site?

that has been a question on mind. can I independently run my steemit and access my SP without depending on a third party?

thank you very much for the super helpful response. I wish there was a way i can save or archive helpful replies!

what do you mean by ' third party' ???

if i turn on the internet and i go to steemit.com and nothing shows up.
what can i do to retrieve my SP and run the Steemit.com program or restore it to the network?

No, it's not possible because archive.org is a separated database, it's isolated from steemit.
but in the other hand if you are afraid that steemit system get down, always transfer your savings to bittrex or poloniex (i'm talking about Steem Dollars ) but for SP i dont think there is a solution.
