On desktop, I can't get an image to upload on my usual go-to clients: failed on Nostrudel, then Coracle, then Iris. Finally got an image to work on Yakihonne. What gives?

Not sure if my other message got through. Try changing the file name extension to .cjs instead of .js I use the bidirectional-bridge.js so I would change it to bidirectiinal-bridge.cjs I've had this same error myself that you got. Something about CommonJS vs JS. Let me know...
