There's a lot of good reasons to join the military besides the joys of war. I would argue also that the military is made up of hundreds of jobs, not just the simple grunts holding a gun.

it does not change the fact that the military is still a killing machine.
I guess it depends on your point of view.
I wasted ten years in the military, and every single job there is to support those killing other people. Excepting for the ones doing the actual killing that is. But don't worry, they are far too incompetent to ever be a real threat.
