What A Man!

IMG_3366.JPG

Peter Parker, our champion (of cuteness) Rooster looking adorable in the light dusting of snow we got last night.

IMG_3342.JPG

And speaking of cuteness, I had that little guy home with me all day. He's got a cold, and is coughing too much to be in class, a day of rest is needed, maybe two. So I'll be chillin' around the homestead doing this that and the other...instead of going on a conventional walk.

As @eddiebowes was waiting for the bus, he noticed a car "parked" in the ditch across the street.

IMG_3338.JPG

He came into the house to tell us. It almost looks like he intentionally parked there. The roads were very icy though from a bit of rain and snow, and the snow melted and then it froze again. It's slick out!

Soon after the police (the one police car we have out here) showed up.

IMG_3340.JPG

IMG_3341.JPG

A dude in a big truck shows up to get the car out. I'm being such a creeper, I know, I know...

IMG_3344.JPG

IMG_3343.JPG

IMG_3345.JPG

It's limping out of there now...

IMG_3346.JPG

IMG_3347.JPG

The damage doesn't look that bad.

IMG_3348.JPG

On the flatbed and off they go. There's my excitement for the year out here :)

Making Buns

If you want my Gramma Anne's bun recipe click HERE

IMG_3352.JPG

My dough is ready, I just leave it until it has doubled. I love that I have a window where I can watch the chickens as I'm kneading my dough. Now that it's winter the crows are always here. They don't come over in the summer, in the winter they're here every day eating with the chickens...

IMG_3351.JPG

Every morning I throw the chickens some scratch, it's so nice that they share. Maybe they think the crows are one of them because so many of our chickens are black.

IMG_3349.JPG

Can you tell the chickens from the crows? If you're on a phone you may not be able to.

IMG_3350.JPG

Dough is Doubled

IMG_3354.JPG

Just gotta form the buns, let them rise again, and we'll be chowing em down in no time.

IMG_3355.JPG

Coffee Time

We make it the semi-old fashioned way, don't use a machine.

IMG_3358.JPG

IMG_3356.JPG

Boil up the water.

IMG_3359.JPG

Grind beans and put a fuck tonne of that ground goodness into a coffee filter.

IMG_3360.JPG

Add the water after it's boiled, it's important to let the water fall from boiling temperature for a bit before pouring onto the grounds or you may fuck your coffee up and give it a bitter taste.

IMG_3362.JPG

Ahhhhhhh...it smells and looks soooooooooo good!

Let's Go See Some Chickens

IMG_3363.JPG

Dark Flame...oooooh she helped me find one of the secret egg nests yesterday! In the morning when I let them out she screwed up by letting me see her run off making her egg laying sound, so I followed her over to a pile of poly that is by the big greenhouse. They were tunnelling in there, I found a stash of 12.

One of you suggested that I leave an egg in the little outside adventure nests that they make, to keep them at least going to the same spot so I don't have to go on Easter Egg hunts anymore. So that's what I've been doing with the other two secret nests, I drew on some eggs with sharpie (so I don't accidentally pick the frozen decoy egg when I'm collecting) and left them in the girls' "secret" spots.

Sure enough a few of the girls are still going back there! I think I can get this situation under wraps here, and only have to search 3 nest spots a day outside, instead of roaming the whole property to trying to find the hidden eggs.

The Punisher & John Cena

Small cuddle puddle underneath the tree fort.

Filled the Eggpron Today!

That's what happens when you find all the secret nests I guess :)

Thank you for coming on another #WalkWithMe, I hope you enjoyed today's shots! I'd like to go on a walk where you live too, so if you get out there for one, take a few pics, and post about your walk using the tag "walkwithme". I'll check the tag regularly to upvote and give encouragement. Let's earn Steem by getting fresh air and fitness together!

Here are a few of the latest walks by fellow Steemians who got out there in the world, and took us with them!

Now...where is my Ham?

Sort:

Haha, Dr Seuss green eggs!
My Mom used to read me that book, nice memories.
Just seeing your tasty buns has got me sending the staff out to the bakery for a freshly baked anything 😂
Those chickens really do keep you on your toes eh! I'm pretty sure they have strategic planning meetings in their coop at night to try and work out where to hide the eggs from you.
I love my daily trip to the Bowes Homestead 😉❤️

They are much more devious than I previously thought...and Darth Layer is a big part of "hatching" these diabolical plans...I'm on to her....

That's my girl. 🐔🐣

I'm sorry to hear one of yours is feeling off. Hope he's better real soon. What a smart idea that was about leaving a frozen no good egg out there to keep them laying. I too live right off a busy road and people are always being pulled over in my driveway or when it snows they tend to skid around the bend. Crow's are amazing birds. I share the same crow tattoo with my oldest daughter we both just picked different coloring to them. I have yellow and blue for the dawn and the night. Nikki has two shades of blue she loves. It's great to share the same tattoo with small differences. My youngest wants something that just I and her share as well when she's just a bit older. Sorry for going on so much. Another fantastic walkwithme indoor addition. : )

That is too cool that you and your daughter have matching tattoos and that your youngest is getting one too, you are one awesome family <3 <3 <3 I'd love to see the designs one day! <3 <3 <3

I love the 'look e loo' shots of you snooping on the car sitution, I would have done the same thing!

Concerning the crows with your chickens, have you ever had them take any chicks? I have known crows to take baby chicks quite easily. Although, maybe you haven't let your free range chickens hatch their own? Or have you?

MMMM coffee. I did a sort #walkwithme today into our village and I ended up having two coffees at two different places. But, I deserved it after a week of being frozen in our house!

You got some snow? We have had a melt for day two now. We are meant to get two days of high 50s (f) and thunderstorms and then another freeze! Oh heavens, not another freeze!

Again, I LOVE that apron. My five girls are now consistently laying every day, the little darlings.

Concerning using a dummy egg, I did that to show my girls what nest box to lay in and that worked. Of course mine are only indoor chickens right now with a tiny run, as I have not figured out how to out smart our local fox, so they cannot free range currently. I might solve that this summer with another flock or larger birds to sort of be a 'buffer', we shall see if that pans out.

Sorry I feel like Ieave you a long letter every time I post a reply.

I LOVE my letters from Donna!! Thank you so much for your meaningful replies!! I saw your walk just now, it was awesome, I'm so glad the weather warmed up, we're warm as hell here too, just for another day though then she's dropping again.

Glad your gals are laying consistently now, and no easter egg hunts in your future. We have hatched many many chicks, and because it was during spring and summer, the gals were locked in their run (to keep them out of the gardens), so we had no issues, thank heavens...

I know, I'm dreading the next drop. I don't think I can handle another two weeks of freeze, but one can one do? Spend more time on Steemit of course.

Do you just let the hens sit on what they like or do you give them certain breed eggs to hatch? I can't wait for one of my gals to go broody because I am going to order a dozen Cream Legbar eggs to stick under her. I am going to try a flock of these to see if they will aide in our chickens being better at free ranging. They are supposed to be great free rangers and they are sex linked so you know what you have, hen or rooster, at hatch! I can't wait for Spring!

We were putting under our own eggs last spring/summer. This year we are going to get some fertilized silkie eggs and hatch those. We may also hatch our own breed of chicks for neighbours, but won't be keeping any of our own, in our flock. Too many of the same genes, need new blood in here. :)

That is a good idea. I can't say enough good things about silkies as pets. They are so gentle and loving and make great mothers, they'll hatch anything. The only downside is they are always at the bottom of the pecking order and are not too predator proof. If your flock hatches and raises them though they should just accept them straight on and protect them I suppose, right? I can't wait to see silkie chicks!

Oh wait I missed that bit, your own breed! I hav alwyas wnated to do this and try for specific traits. The gene study of this is so interesting. Have you ever been on the online backyardchickens forum? The level of breeding and scientific records some of the cross breeders keep are really interesting, well if you are a chicken nerd they are ;)

Yessss, backyardchickens is my go to chicken bible of info! I've gotten so much knowledge from there!

I so appreciated my morning walk with you @lyndsaybowes. I too am blessed with chickens and a holistic life. I love your egg apron!! That's a great idea for the kids here who like to collect eggs! Brilliant!

I live in community at the @gardenofeden. If you haven't heard of us, I'm sure you will find we have much in common. Upvoting and following you. I feel we have much to share! Infinite blessings to you.

Infinite blessings to you too! xoxo You're doing great work!

"Grind beans and put a fuck tonne of that ground goodness into a coffee filter."

Instruction manuals would be so much more fun to read if you wrote them. :)

YAY!!! I've never heard someone tell me that before haha, I'm flattered!

i came here to say the same thing! plus, "fuck tonne" is the correct spelling - dont believe those fools that tell you to lose those those last two letters.

Bwa hahahaa!!! Noiiiiiice!!

How did I get to be this old and not know about at eggpron? And I call myself a chicken rancher, I am ashamed... LOL!
I am a fellow coffee snob, home roast my own. I am pretty low maintenance but don't hand me bad coffee, please!

Oooh we gotta hook you up with an eggpron, you will love this!! Never smash an egg in your pocket again! <3 <3 Hugs, from one coffee snob to another @fishyculture!! xoxo

Hello @lyndsaybowes

It is foggy here too and i am enjoying my rest with blanket but yes i have to go to work :(
But let me tell you your way to enjoy the life is too damn beautiful

Kid is so cute ♡ get well soon young man

Mr. Pendock is missing again

Your cooking and that coffee made me hungry

Enjoy the life as you are doing and lets spread the peace together

Stay Blessed My Friend :-)

When I went out to take pictures of the chickens, Mr. Pendock was already up on his roost. He likes to go to bed really, really early. Him and about 8 of the older hens retire long before sun down, and all the teenagers stay out until the last moment before dark. Thanks for always making such meaningful comments @salmanbukhari54. You are a wonderful friend.

Oh Mr. Pendock seems an early to bed early to rise mind set :D
In my other house i have many hens too :)
I have pictures of Mr. Banko ( Friend of Mr. Pendock) but due to low internet capacity or speed pics are not uploading here i will show you another time for sure @lyndsaybowes

Oooooh my goodness, he is soooooooo sweet looking, really looks like he has a good temperament :) xoxo Mr. Pendock flaps his wings and says Hi!

Actually I had the same rooster in 2013 but someone stole that beautiful creature Mr. Pendock looks alike him. That is why i like Pendock a lot <3
He is so Dashing ;) @lyndsaybowes by the way i am also very happy as i wrote today my introductory post and pay my sweet Hi too to Mr. Pendock ;)

Hope your son is getting better soon. With only one police car, you must live in a very safe place. Just like beacons, ham is from pigs. ;-) Raising pigs anytime soon?

Hhahaaaa are you making a cop joke hhahahaa :) :) :) :) We are going to be adding pigs to our homestead actually, we're hoping this spring if all goes well!

Mmmmmmm...

Haha ... I am trying to. ;-) Yummm ... I can smell beacons cooking on your stove already from next year. :-)

Okay, you are a very inspiring person and I realized today that "Walk with me" is a cool thing that other Steemians are doing and that I could join in w/o being a copy catter, giggle!! Thanks for sharing your little piece of the world and a big piece of your heart @lyndsaybowes and as a side note, that hat would be perfect for Haturday!! Steemit is so fun :)

I cannot wait to see your shining face in the #walkwithme tag!! YAY!!! And I'll have to look in to "Haturday" lolol sounds fun!

You had a lot going on there. Such a busy woman :) My grandpa also has many chicken in his house in the field. There are also piglets there. And grown up piglets. Lol haha! But seriously yes :) Is @eddiebowes your husband? Have he tried cock fighting? My grandpa is sometimes doing that.

Get well soon to your son. I'm pretty sure he'll be okay real quick ;)

HAHAA !!! Eddie is our eldest son, he is 13 now, and I think he would be very sad if we tried to get his pet roosters to fight hahaha, they are very gentle and tame birds :) Thank you for the laughs!

Omg. My bad. I was trying to check his blogs yesterday to see if he really is your husband but my net sucks so i just asked you instead.

Im glad Eddie got a very gentle roosters. My grandpa's always tries to had a fight with me whenever I just walk passed by it. 😡 Its really a fighter. Hahaha!

Yea I had a Roo that would attack people...he never attacked me though, I was his Mommy....but we still had to say goodbye to him because he hurt a couple kids... :'(

You have me cracking up in a few places. I'm pretty picky about my coffee as well. :) Oh my, the apron! If you could see the smile on my face. Chickens are fun, aren't they. I hope your Son feels better soon.

I'm glad to hear you liked the apron, my friend who made it said it was fairly simple,,,,if you know how to sew that is..

i'm encouraged to proceed with a silly dream I've had for a long time. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

Aw, you're very welcome haha, it was pretty inadvertent :) I'll take it though haha!

Hope Kied feels better soon! Ash is still coughing off and on too. Perhaps I should bring over some of the new cough syrup I made? Its got like 20 lung herbs in it. I got an old school percolater for my coffee now, no plastic, love it!

I need to get a non plastic thingee that the filter goes in, and I'll be all set. We still have the elderberry syrup that you gifted us, if you wanted to share some of your new one that'd be awesome but we do still have a bit of the other left. Hugs Amy! Thanks for your huge heart!!

I think I should bring some, it is definately helping Ash. I've got a (hopefully) quick thing to do then I'll message before I pop by :) Do you want some Kefir grains too? I did a post about them yesterday and have had no takers. Something new to try :)

Thank you so much for the wholesome gifts you brought us! Much Love!

My pleasure, any time! Love to you too <3

I feel like I've been in the kitchen with you all day. I can practically smell the bread and coffee.

Hope your little man is feeling better soon.

Thank you so much Winston <3

aww poor little guy I think you got that cough from me...so sorry...Dang good thing that car was on the opposite side of the road eh. whew. Mr. Peter Parker so beautiful you are yes....

He's feeling much better now, and will most likely go to school tomorrow :) I hope you're feeling better now too!

Haha! Great post!
I feel your pain with the hidden eggs... My hens do that periodically and it drives me NUTS! They have perfectly good nest boxes! I have only been getting 3-5 eggs a day lately because they are off hiding them somewhere...
Checked the goat sheds, compost piles, greenhouse, man.. I think they have picked a new spot. Ugh!
Haha, thanks for the post and have a great night!

AHAHAA!! YESSSSS!!!! Someone who can really empathize with me!! :) Oooh my goodness......where could they be this time eh??? Crazy birds... I hope you find it soon!!

Bah ha ha!
You and me both!
Driving me nuts! And with a husband and three kids, you know we run through those eggs!

Hey @lyndsaybowes! Are you sure the first picture is my Peter Parker? Does he now have brown around his neck?

Yes hahahaha!! That's the one and the Only, your little man!! <3 <3 <3

The chicken whisperer...

You got it haha!

I enjoyed scrolling down and seeing each new part of your adventure...almost like I went on the walk with you! Keep up the great work! Beautiful photos! <3

such a great work wonderful story really love it

Thank you so much for letting me know that you enjoyed it @deybala :)

That car parked outside looked so eerie and alerting the police was the wisest thing to do.
Wow, the buns, I hope you still have some left... Oh the distance but I can perceive its aroma from across the globe.... Hmmm😀

Thanks for sharing the story of your day 🙂

Thank you for being a part of it <3

I’m brand new to the site. But I can see you live in a small town, raise chickens and have 1 cop in town lol. Thanks for sharing, great pics.

1 cop in town.. just like Nicholasville lol..

LOL, Nicholasville has more cops then people.

Welcome @hustleking! I'm glad you like our place, and that you're on Steemit!

Thank you, much appreciated. Lot to learn but I’m like a sponge so I should pick it up fast 😁

After a long time I've seen other people with you... I thought you were living with kids and chickens. Only lol .Walking With you today was long.. But it was nice because eventually there's coffee and eggs.,
Dark Flame. We must punish her for telling you about the secrets of the group
thank you. @lyndsaybowes

The Punisher will take care of it, I'm sure :) Hehee...!!

Window of the world... In cold weather to sit at home and rolls and coffee ... that's wonderful. Why is it called John Cena? The Punisher has a very beautiful pattern of the feathers. I liked his colouring. Thank you for Your walk today.:)

John Cena is a wrestler, and we had a chicken naming contest, a Steemian named @joordanzzz suggested that name, and the children loved it, so he won!

Oh yeah!!! I was hoping in my mind that it is . I love John Cena. I watched a lot of fights with his participation. Thank you!

So happy to see that y'all have a coffee grinder..

Screenshot_20180110-193140.jpg

Your chickens are trying to start a #opchickenangels tag lol

Omg you're so right!!! #ChickenBitches!! Trying to steal the Op from us hahahhaaa!!!

Good cluck with that.. I mean luck

You finally found the chicken's nests! Haha! LOVING your egg-pron! lol utterly fantastic.

YESSS!!! Such a SCORE to find those nests :) Thank you for sharing in my happiness @mountainjewel xo

I'm jealous of the snow, we haven't gotten enough here. Sounds and looks like it was a very pleasant day. :)

Did you end up moving? I remember in the summer you said you were planning a move.

Yep! Living in Kansas City now. It's borderline incomprehensible how much my life has changed since getting here too.

Planning your gardens yet?

Planning another local move first, so it depends on where we end up!

Mmmm... I can almost smell the buns and coffee from here! And I need to get me one of those “eggprons” if we ever decide to get chickens again. Too cute! 😍

I hope you can have chickens again one day! :)

Peter Parker, The Punisher, and John Cena The Roosters! 😆😂🤣😆😂🤣

Now you're gonna really laugh...John Cena and the Punisher are hens HAHAHHAA!! We're a strange bunch, I know...

Next one’s gonna get named Brock Lesnar! 😆😂🤣

I enjoyed scrolling down and seeing each new part of your adventure...almost like I went on the walk with you! Keep up the great work! Beautiful photos

Beautiful pictures, very beautiful pictures today. I really like your eggpron and the buns looks so inviting

Thank you @eleaza, have you ever seen an Eggpron before?

No, I have never seen one so I was so fascinated when I saw you wearing one. It's very handy

an Eggpron ! I want to see Dave Dickey wearing that lol !!

Looks like you had a good day @lyndsybowes! I don't mind crows around my chickens at all. A crows will chase away a hawks 😁. I love your eggpron!😊

I experienced crows chase a hawk away from our coop this last spring! They are such Angels to our family!!

Some times ill even through some scraps on the outside of the electric netting to keep the crows around.

Brilliant job! You're a great steward!!

Hahahha "that's my excitement for the day" made me laugh. I love that the chickens share with the crows!!! <33

HAHA my excitement for the year hahahaha....I have a pretty uneventful life <3 <3 <3

Sounds peaceful, I'd much rather have only one pig, you'll find out why when I post about the place I lived at before diving headfirst into being offgrid >.< ever since then uneventful = good! lol I finally made the animal sanctuary post though! :D

I just loved this walk. Black chickens are the bomb, such contrast with the snow.
The eggpron could come in quite handy, can’t tell you how many eggs I’ve dropped😉🐓

I'm trying to convince my friend who made it, to start manufacturing them!

I'll buy one!

That coffee is more badass than making it in a bodum! Hahaha green eggs and ham!! I have bun envy, those look so good. Really cool the crows and chickens together! Happy bird fam:)

Oooh bodum?? I have a new word to look up, haha, thank you!

French coffee press. No electricity as well but a little fancy but also cheap haha!

wao. its so nice and epic,, you always put a great photos ,,, the cute child and nice recipe all are very good,, specially your love with chicken is amazing

Thank you so much for being a part of our lives @ailsamoon! xo

I love your creepy shots. It gives a good behind the scenes. I should try to take some of them creepy shots lol. One thing that amazes me is how you remember all the chickens names 🤣 I hate crows... they sounds hideous compared to other birds. Prince george had alot of crows. Great post👍

PG is how I first learned to love crows! I realized from living there, surrounded by so many, how smart they are! They would pick on people who were mean to them. I saw this happen with two people. I have many, many crow stories that would have you cheering for their brilliance! Yes, their voice leaves a lot to be desired, yet...did you ever wonder maybe if they are annoying you because they can tell that you don't like them? They do this!

That is knowledge right there hahaha

Loved your story and your chickens for sure. Hope to get some more chicks
this spring.

Nice way of doing the coffee. My grandma did the same. Good old memories.

I like to watch the dough rise and your apron full of eggs.

These impromptu breaks are real fun then the normal planned ones. I see you had some teal good time :)

How many eggs do you guys normally get a day?

When I can find them all, around 20-24 :) :) :)

Whoa, thats a lot of eggs. Have you ever tried turkey eggs? We had a turkey on the farm when we were kids. I loved eating the eggs scrambled on toast with vegemite!

No I haven't tried turkey eggs...I think if we got turkeys though, they'd be for meat, as you can see we have enough eggs LOL!! Gobble Gobble!!

Hahaha. I hear ya. We ended up eating ours to. We had chickens as well.

I always enjoy reading people's chicken stories, the names of yours ate great. Add some coffee into the story and yiu have a perfect post.

Nice post beautiful presented and explained. detail oriented with nice photography. @lynsaybowes thank you for sharing
