Walk With Me ~ Today There Was No Gardening!

in #walkwithme7 years ago

I had big plans for today in the garden. I was going to transplant like, 300 seedlings. However, it was rainy this morning and although it cleared up in the afternoon I never did get one single plant in.

This was literally the only blossom open on the tree and a ladybug is visiting it!

My day started out early with watering in the greenhouse. I soaked everything since the sun wasn't out to scorch the leaves. Much easier than having to be careful.

Showering everyone!

I noticed these basil babies got either sun scorched or a bit too cold...you can see the discoloration in the leaves. They will be fine, the new leaves growing in will be adjusted to the climate. It happens during the hardening process sometimes

These hanging baskets have a dwarf variety of cherry tomatoes called Ditmarsher Pink. It is a bit of an experiment, I will weigh the branches down to help them grow downwards

These are all of the plants going out first. Brassicas, herbs, celery and onions. They are waiting patiently...hopefully tomorrow.

This is pretty cool, it is a log I rolled with my foot and the bark fell off. The inside has trails all through the wood!

On my way back in I checked out the rhubarb/garlic bed. I noticed in areas that 2 kinds of lettuces I grew last year have reseeded themselves all over the place! How awesome is that? I will have a really good supply and it shouldn't interfere with the garlic, they are small compact varieties that I can just pull when they are the size I want them!

Inside while it was raining I did a bunch of laundry and made fresh tea to make a new batch of kombucha. This batch was really nice with tons of bubbles!

Strained and bubbly

Bottled with blueberries and strawberries for the second ferment!

When it cleared up I was back outside to pick dandelions to make jelly for market on Sunday. There were lots of bees working hard, and luckily for them thousands of dandelions!

Ready to pull petals to make tea!

It took about an hour and a half to make these:

Now they will sit and steep until tomorrow, then I will strain and chill until Thursday when I make the jelly!

It is 7:30pm as I am typing this, I am off to make dinner then start more seeds. Tomorrow I will get that planting done.....

Oh, I will also have to deal with a bunch of these tomorrow. I am glad I noticed. Bunch of jerks.....

Does it make a difference in the tea if you have the green calyx petals in with the flower petals? There's a strong warning when making the dandelion jelly to keep them out as they are bitter.

Of all the plants I kicked out yesterday, basil stayed in because it is so susceptible to the temps and shocked plants are weakened, making them targets for disease. Hoping to avoid the mildew issue...

Love the baby pics, as always! And your ladybug.

I am not sure if it does make a difference, I am always pretty careful about only using the petals. I imagine it would make the tea a bit bitter.

Ya, it was only those basil trays, I think they were a bit too dry and it is sun scorch. I am not too worried, basil does really well here and it has a couple of weeks to recover. I think I am going against the grain and not planting out this weekend....the temps are dropping to 5 overnight and thats too close to freezing for me!!

I love walking out in my garden as well. So exciting to see new life. What a great dandelion patch. I'm always looking for the seeds to blow, but none look as robust as yours. I've never heard of dandelion jelly. Sounds yummy!

The dandies just showed up the other day, and I think this is the best year yet since I moved here! I love all of the stuff waking up too <3 What do you grow in your garden?

Really trying to branch out this year, focusing on perennials...gooseberries, strawberries, figs, kiwis, currents, herbs. I'm also loving watching the tomatoes, ground cherries, peppers, garlic and onions grow.

Looks like it's totally busy there despite not planting! Looks like a peaceful day.

We have that scribbly wood on our scribbly gums.. I love the patterns it makes. Its from a particular grub I think that turns into a moth...

It was pretty peaceful and busy! Is that what does that? A grub! I like that, scribbly wood <3

Wow Sis, it's all looking absolutely amazing!! You definitely have your work cut out for you with planting those seedlings, awesome job with getting them to this point!

I've never heard of dandelion jelly until today, sounds interesting...

Great closeups on everything, I especially enjoyed the bees. I love those little lettuce volunteers :) :) So happy for you!!!
