Once upon a time, there was a young, tall and gorgeous man from an African community. He lived in a small community with a large population. The preponderance of the population in the community was young adults in his age set.
He was widely known in his community as well as the far neighboring communities in the country. He was born unique with exceptional features that distinguished him from other members of the communities. His athletic mien and the smart body fitted clothes he wears always singled him out everywhere he goes. His name was a domiciliary name across communities living hundreds of miles apart. He was a giant man with a charming dark skin and a smart round face to behold. Everyone admired this young man including old women and grannies. He regularly received proposals from parents and guardians offering to give their lovely daughters to him for marriage. Soon, he was living under pressure; everyone wanted him to be their son-in-law by all means.
He eventually found a beautiful lady of his heart and fell in love with her. She too was the most beautiful young lady in her community where she was equally the subject of admiration and discussion for all men including the old and grandparents. Every man in the community obviously wanted to marry her excluding her parents and siblings to whom such thoughts were a taboo. Their relationship soon became the talk of the two villages and beyond. Women would stop on their way to the river in search of water and gossip about them for hours till it’s dark, and they’d return home with no water. Others would meet in the market and discuss the Romeo and Juliet of their time till they are found standing alone midnight in the market square. Some had their food burnt on the fire whilst listening and fantasying the true love story of these two love birds.
Other young girls in the community saw these two as a subject of envy and jealousy. They would sit in the farms gossiping and insulting the charming young girl and his handsome boyfriend and calling them unprintable names as the light of the community was shining on them. Parents too were not left out in the jealousy wagon. They were sad and worried that their daughters were getting older in their homes with no suitors while the young lady had dozens coming for her hand in marriage. Others, too, were furious that their sons were turned down by the young lady.
This love affair continued slickly for a while and both parties were seen happy and enjoying the attention it brought on them. The young man soon mobilized his community and moved his entourage nippily to the lady’s community requesting her hand in marriage. With excitement, his host community received him and his entourage gladly. They were happy to give out their most precious and beautiful daughter to another precious and handsome son of the neighboring community. Everyone woman; young and old saw him [the young man] as the perfect male creation of their time as they praised his beauty. They were indeed glad to have an equally beautiful son-in-law in him.
The two communities unanimously blessed the duo according to their traditional rites and handed the lady to the elders of the young man’s community in the presence of the public as required by tradition.
Soon after the marriage… to be continued
