On NVC, Whale Bashing, Expectations, and Quitting Your Job

in #vlog8 years ago (edited)

15 minutes of my thoughts this morning concerning non-violent communication, whale bashing, expectations, and quitting your job. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting my thoughts out there.

And yes, I hear the popping noises from my mic. I adjusted the volume levels from the last time, but the mic htting my shirt is annoying so I'll buy a new mic to make these better in the future.

I hope you have a great weekend!

P.S. If you haven't yet read Dan's latest post, please go check it out. It's one of my favorites on Steemit so far.

Awesome post. Great points all around 👍🏻

Thank you and thanks for stopping by! I've really enjoyed your videos and even played around with doing a multi-camera approach a month or so a go with my iPhone. You definitely got me inspired to do this stuff and so I'll be stepping up my game in many respects.

When I saw the trending post about the person quitting their job for Steemit, I really wished there was a way to support them without making it seem only brave instead of brave and definitely, definitely not for everyone. When I first started there was a user who posted openly about trying to live off Steemit and got very upset when they released a t-shirt and a cute girl released a really similar t-shirt a few days later and she got the recognition. Being an entrepreneur can be far more discouraging than that! As Steemit develops, I hope that there will be fewer "How to Get Rich Off Steemit Like I Did" type articles.

Dan's post on non-violent communication reminded me, the way all his posts do, that we have a philosopher king here (apologies if my Plato is rusty and the analogy fails). Steemit is such a cool unicorn. I still feel so awed and lucky to have found this community. I always appreciate your posts and like this upgrade to video. Thank you for reminding us all how to voice our needs.

Great comment, @pulpably. Thank you! I'll have to read up on the philosopher king idea... it sounds familiar but I'm a combination of rusty and ignorant when it comes to some Plato stuff. :)

And suddenly I have an idea for my next post...;)

Excellent! Following you so I hopefully won't miss it.

Wow! I'll reference this video, since it led to the thought in the first place. :) Time to work. Yes!

Yes - I get a kick out of the "I'm quitting my job" posts after a month into steemit. I've left careers and started businesses. You should have atleast a year of living expenses saved before even considering leaving a job.

Better yet, if you can build a business while working a job to the point that the income is 50% of your job income, then jump on in too.

But, 90% of business fail. Why would a "business" on steemit be any different. That rule applies to every business type in every industry.

Just words of advice to the masses as I've been there done that. Steem on for the enjoyment, for the expression and if the money comes, well that cool too.

You should have atleast a year of living expenses saved before even considering leaving a job.

This!

if you can build a business while working a job to the point that the income is 50% of your job income, then jump on in too.

This even more! I didn't leave my job until all of my expenses were covered. Actually, my first goal with FoxyCart was to allow my wife to stay at home and raise our family. The year she quit, FoxyCart's income increased just enough that by the end of the year things actually balanced out financially. It was a huge a accomplishment for us.

Luke, you are in a rare minority that took the practical path and did it successfully. I took the first part of that path, but unfortunately the business never did better than just getting by so I moved on after many years. I wanted more. My interest and passion in several different businesses doesn't help either...lol.

I plan to watch the video in your earlier post after work. Speaking of...back to work!

Thanks! As you said, 90% of businesses fail. I recognize and appreciate the great luck I've had. I've also worked hard to make that luck. :)

Wise words. Thank you!

You're welcome! Thanks for commenting.

I have the need to say this Luke, people are just ignorant, complaining about something is always easy, doing something about it, is hard (referencing the whale bashing). Great points overall in the video, too bad not many people share the same opinion as you. I share identical "views" on all this. :)

Some people are provably ignorant... Unfortunately they confuse that reality with a judgement against them being stupid. :) Ignorance can be fixed, but sometimes I wonder about stupid.

Thanks minion. I have high hopes, but I try to keep them separate from my expectations so as not to be disappointed.

You are a great speaker! I been into radio and video since I was 10 I'm starting to love being in front of a camera again , I may make a big move soon I have all the connects to be seen just dont know if I want to be famous yet:) Cheers nice share!!!

Fame is indeed over-rated. Money sure is nice though as it helps us acquire things we want and help others. I prefer the option to be famous if my ego needs a stroke, but certainly appreciate being relatively unknown. Some famous people... aren't very happy.

Thanks again for your comments @arcaneinfo. I do appreciate them.

Lets make one thing clear. Violence is when someone steals something (life, liberty, property) from another person. So, when the devs dump more value than is being injected, it drives it down, as you said. Thats fine if its monopoly money, but people are putting their hard earned dollars into SD and they're losing it. The devs know the outcome of their actions. This is an greedy act that is HURTING people. Something is being stolen thus it is violent and that is WRONG. That is EVIL. So when people screw with other people like that I get a little pissed and as you say, project my intentions or make a judgement. Its called righteousness indignation my friend-standing up for whats right. Man up and stop bending over for these assholes. You know damn well what they're doing is wrong.

I was going to respond, but I see you wrote a breakup letter two days ago and are leaving, so maybe it's a waste of time to respond.

Its not. If you have any more information that can help people or correct anything ive said, it can only help. You made great points in the video that people need to hear. I hope it gets exposure.

Respect man! Great video, as always enjoyed it. You are right, expectations are very powerful and look forward to your post on this.

Thank you! I'll have to get on that, eventually. Enjoying the weekend so far. :)

Followed :)
The topic like many others, but they way you presented it, made it a high quality content. Clear, well-argued, a bit funny. Good job.

Thank you! I greatly appreciate your time and attention and love the feedback.

Thanks for the shout out! I've really learned a lot from our discussion, and from this video. I especially liked the part about adjusting expectations and the small pond analogy. A lot of people get excited about the possibilities and often forget that once Steemit grows, the status quo would drastically shift from what it is now. Who's famous now might be just average when the celebrities come. Consequently, who's a nobody now will be more unknown by then as well.

I'm glad you saw the irony with my introduceyourself post being my last post haha I still chuckle about it sometimes. I still have a couple of posts to put up, but I'm spending drastically less time on Steemit than before. More of my posts can be seen through feature author posts.

Great insights. I wish a lot of people learn from all of these videos.

I'm spending drastically less time on Steemit than before.

That's probably a really good thing. Balance in everything. 8 hours a day on social media is probably not a good balance. ;)

What's the robinhoodwhale though? I still have no clue what it is.

Oh, and I forgot to mention in my comment before, it's pronounced jed-ow. As in, "I just stepped on a rusty nail! Ow!" haha

Have you read the posts @robinhoodwhale has made explaining the project or checked the robinhood chat channel? I have a post explaining what it is as well. If you have checked all that and it's still confusing, you may want to drop a comment for the team so they can clarify what doesn't make sense.

I didn't notice it before but the account you linked to was misspelled (ronbinhoodwhale). I'll check out their post in a bit, but I've been dreading going back to chat.

Bah! Sorry about the misspelling. That's twice now I've misspelled that account.

Haha! No worries, kinda remembered all the FC chats with the misspell. Good times.

+1 really great vid !
I really liked the premise of your video, (imho) which was basically "Don't approach anything from an emotional reaction". (imho) That is always based on 'failed logic' and most often ends in the opposite of your expectations or hopes. We should have 'Hope' in our lives, Not live on it'.
Again, really good video, Thank You for your time and effort !

Thanks for the feedback! I think positive emotions have their place in the world (such as during intamcy), but I think negative emotions can cause all kinds of ridiculousness. They serve a purpose to let us know when things aren't right within ourselves or others, but they are terrible guides for making decisions. Thanks again for your words of encouragement. I have a traveling trip coming up, but when I get back, I plan to get a nice mic and keep the videos coming.
