Weeding the Orchard

I have a weed problem in my Back to Eden Orchard. I mean a really big weed problem. I thought the whole Back to Eden method was supposed to reduce weeds?

It serves me right, however. I mean I've literally treated my little front yard Back to Eden Orchard with Sheer Total Utter Neglect. Mark Shepard originally coined the phrase STUN (Sheer Total Utter Neglect) in his book Restoration Agriculture. Come to find out he later revised the phrase to Strategic Total Utter Neglect. So I decided to do a little 'strategic' weed control.

I ran out of my 'biodegradable weed mat' near the end of the day. No big deal, I'll just make a quick trip to Lowe's/Depot to get more. You won't find this stuff in the garden center however. You'll find 'masking/builder's paper' instead in the paint department. This stuff is great. It smothers out the weeds, and after a few months breaks down and adds additional organic matter to the soil.

Hopefully this will take care of the weeds for a while. Last fall I planted spaghetti squash and cantaloupe between the fruit trees. I'm not sure what I'm going to do this spring, however. Maybe a bunch of Thai eggplant? Or who knows? Maybe the wife will come up with a request of her own. I know we are about out of the green beans I planted out back in the pasture last summer. We shall see . . .
