EMERGE – A TRANSFORMATION TO BEHOLD

in #video7 years ago

The metamorphosis of the Cicada species is amazing to observe.

I was blessed enough to photograph the transformation last year in this post, and incredibly I was able to film the process this year. Since it took over 70 minutes for me to record it, I took the initiative to send the raw footage over to @mericanhomestead to speed it up and put it to some music.

Now, you can watch the Cicada emerge in less than a minute! Thanks @mericanhomestead!

EMERGE

^ 53 SECOND VIDEO ^

If you have never seen this in real life, I would highly recommend checking out the video. I had never observed it in person until the one that I photographed last year, and this was my first time recoding one. For those of you who want to learn a little more, I’ll explain it.

The Cicada does not live its entire life as the winged insect that makes a loud buzzing noise up in the trees. Though there are many species of Cicadas, they all follow the same basic life cycle. Prior to turning into a flying insect, Cicadas live underground. When the larvae is fully developed, it crawls up out of the earth and climbs the nearest tree or other tall object.

When it finds an appropriate spot, it locks onto the bark with its sharp claws. Once it is secure, it begins to pulsate and eventually the back of its exoskeleton breaks open, exposing the adult Cicada, which is still soft at this point.

After a lot of wiggling and squirming, the Cicada works its way free from the exoskeleton of its larval stage. Soon, it crawls completely out and then expands its wings.

At this point, the ones around here are an amazing green color. Their only goals at the moment are to allow their new exoskeleton and wings to harden, and to not get eaten.

Soon, they are ready for flight, and for life as an adult. I learned a little more about the Cicada on my recent trip to Texas, but I still have not put together that post yet.

If you would like to learn a little more, check out my WILD-MAN post about the Cicada, or just watch the video from it below.

THE WILD-MAN'S WILD FRIEND - CICADA

VERY FORTUNATE

Often, we can find tons of the empty exoskeletons like Monster Truck the Pepper has in his hands. Many times we see the flying Cicadas too, or hear them high in the tree tops, but these are difficult to capture. I consider us to be very fortunate to have actually observed a few hatching, and to photograph and film them too!

THANKS!

A special thanks to @mericanhomestead for putting forth the effort to edit my raw footage and allow us to experience over an hour in less than a minute.

If anyone is really interested, here are the two videos that were combined to make the finished project. These each run over 30 minutes.

Holy crap, cool coincidence! I just posted about this! Interesting to see the different color they are down in your area compared to here up north. Wish I could have done a time lapse too, but oh well.

I've met a few different species, and discovered one that I never knew existed while in Texas recently. Thanks for the REAL COMMENT too. Have a 100% upvote!

Thanks Papa! I appreciate that!

Indeed, the ones I've always had were brown and therefore notably grosser.

never saw these insects. they are beautiful. that was a great effort you put in it. Thanks for sharing it with us

Wow @papa-pepper this is awesome to see the transformation of this beautiful insect on video..thanks a lot for sharing

What an amazing post. Can't say that I ever saw a cicada hatch out, I just remember wearing their old shells on my shirt as a kid. Awesome job and a big thumbs up to @mericanhomestead for helping out.

I saw one of these the other day sitting ontop of its shell, first time ever seeing it, super cool. Thanks for sharing!

Amazing papa-pepper

Very nice photography and amazing video i watch daily blog i like your blog and follow you thanks for sharing good job nice photography

That was some amazing footage of the transformation/emerging.

Very interesting. Thanks again.

Absolutely amazing to see such a close-up view! I'm from Virginia USA so we have them out in the country areas. I live in Richmond now and I miss the soothingly-strange sounds. I really love the picture of the shells! They used to creep out my son when he was a kid, so I made sure to have one on hand every time we played outside lol.

I have never seen them in this much detail though, you are right you two were truly lucky to have been able to capture these moments! It's a beautiful example of growth and evolution.

I followed, not asking for a refollow, I just want to see more similar posts in the future!

-Sorry for the re-edit- I thought of a question: People say there are 7 year Cicada's, but I remember hearing them many years growing up, way more often than every 7 years. Does anybody know more about the different types of Cicada's? That would be a fun discussion.

Thank you so much for this post!! We were just talking about this! Will show it to my husband as well :)

Oh my God. You are so brave man @papa-pepper.

What are the environmental benefits of the Cicada and how do they help humans? - Listened to the videos. Thanks - Troy

bro you have serious love for god creation and nature i love your all post i made this for you i hope you would atleast see it :)

Wow! I like it!

Glad to hear that my friend :) <3

I like nature and all, but there is no way I could have had a Cicada on my face! Interesting, as always, Papa-pepper.

Ewww! makes ugly face But yes, it was surely a thing to witness. The way it struggled to come out and then opens up it's legs and wings. Right now I wonder if there are some of these who fail to come out of their exoskeltion, just because it is so difficult and time consuming. Do you think, some of them just give up?

The one on the lower left died, because another one grasped onto its back and emerged. You can just barely see it.

Oh wow, grasped on other's back. What are these aliens!!

There will be more bungholes after me!

Cool! Learn something new everyday!

We didn't catch the one I was able to capture last week as it was emerging but we did get it right after it emerged and it crawled right into a spiderweb. We decided to save it and I captured some additional photos, you are so lucky you were able to capture that.

Really cool post. It's so exciting to see nature everyday unfolding the way it does. It's what I like best about living in on a homestead!

Great sci-fi horror flick you got started there! (:•o)
Educational too - thanks.

Man, those things are ugly. Pretty cool though, you got to see a transformation.

there are lots of those insects here in my country. usually they come by during summer time and make weird noises in midday which kinda makes you take a nap.

Thats amazing and so beautiful

Very cool! We have swarms of cicadas in Australia also. Sometimes there are so many in the bush making their noise, it hurts your ears because it is so loud. We used to collect the shells also. Fascinating creatures.

Nice to see that amaing transformation in less than a minute. Thank you for sharing all the pics and video narration. I learnt something new :) Upvoted and resteemed

Stumbled to your account by accident. Love your photography and they way you blog.

You seem like a very chill guy and I would love to have a beer with you one day. Cheers!

It's just amazing the work of mother nature! One of the best video I have ever watched man, wow! Just love the green color of them!

Sharing for others to be able to see this awesome video of it all.. Thank You for taking the time to film it and for Zac @mericanhomestead to work it out for you...I love the community here, so much different than the year of hell I received at YT...

Now that is cool, I thought when I found those shells they were dead but it's kinda like when a snake sheds its skin.

Awesome post. I never knew so much about them until now, thanks. Now I can actually understand what the heck my son is talking about when he talks about them :) I have only heard them around our area but never seen them.

a very informative and interesting post. Amazing photos @papa-pepper

Wow, last year was my first experience with cicadas (don't have them in NorCal) and one buzzed me and one of the chickens caught it mid air and ran off. It happened so fast I guess that's what happened.

I only see evidence of them otherwise, holes in the ground, shells and a ruckus in the trees. I heard they are underground 17 years, have you heard that?

I guess you can make El Chirper Tacos out of these guys. They are kind of like Shrimp!

That is very cool to watch. I've never seen anything emerge from its exoskeleton before and the color is gorgeous...I love the wings the most...just lovely. :D

Have an awesome day. :D

Thank you @mericanhomestead for helping @papa-pepper with video. It is amazing and informative. I knew that these little critters had a 17-year cycle but I didn' know they lived underground. How cool is that!

This is something I've always wanted to watch from start to finish. Thanks for the post!!

it looks like Cell in Dragon ball Z.. Lol

Congratulations @papa-pepper!
