I believe that the reason why people don't even give free software a try is because they have a preconceived stereotyped view that free software is good. That was, probably, the case many years ago, when there were just a few developers "donating" their time to open source projects. Nowadays, however, thanks to the widespread access to the internet, people are more connected than ever.
