Many Steemians including me have a concern about increased number of voting bots coming up almost every month and to some extent, disturbing the Steemit Economic System. On the other hand, the positive thing is many people have come up with some unique ideas and are building applications on Steem Blockchain and running different projects for the betterment of this platform. The main purpose of this analysis is to show a clear picture of what is happening here by showing a general analysis of accounts created, how many of these accounts have become Whales, Orcas, Dolphins & Minnows, a short analysis of whales, top 20 accounts in terms of vests & their activity on this platform and analysis of top 20 accounts who received delegations.
Data
All the data was extracted from Steem SQL Database (Paid subscription service held and managed by @arcange). SQL query that was used to extract the data can be found at the end of this post. The data was taken from June 1, 2017 (The month I joined Steemit) to February, 28, 2018.
General Analysis Of Accounts Created From June 2017 - February 2018
Total 604938 accounts were created From June 2017 to February 2018. Out of these total accounts, 159742 accounts(26.40% of the total accounts) were created in January 2018. The reason might be the sky touching prices of SBDs/Steem in December/January and people were more attracted towards this platform.
Accounts Status
Whales - 2
Orca - 55
Dolphin - 579
Minnows - 3914
Redfish - 600388
Following formula was used in excel to get the status of each account
=IF(E2<1000000,"REDFISH",IF(AND(E2>=1000000,E2<10000000),"MINNOW",IF(AND(E2>=10000000,E2<100000000),"DOLPHIN",IF(AND(E2>=100000000,E2<1000000000),"ORCA",IF(E2>1000000000,"WHALE","NONE")))))
@misterdelegation has the highest number of vests 33854469950.6656 and out of these, 22329690818.7047 have been delegated to following accounts.
Though it's still a mystery who owns this account but a common myth is that this account is being controlled by Steemit Inc itself.
The second account that was able to become a whale was @promobot (voting bot). This account has almost 1001575743.26665 vests and 25000000 vests had been delegated to @utopian-io
Top 20 Accounts In Terms of Vests
Out of 77180711222.5569 vests, top 20 accounts hold 41060076893.4519 vests which is around 53.20% of the total vests. After noticing this unequal distribution of vests, I further went into some deep analysis and tried to figure out how many of them were voting bots and if there is any account that regularly engages with the community and do some manual curation.

@imacryptorick | 202132848.127872 | Quit Steemit 2 months ago | No |
Out of these top 20 accounts, two of them are voting bot accounts, whereas, five of them regularly engage with the community. Four of these accounts have no activity on their blogs and two of them have delegated their vests to other accounts. Two other accounts have delegated their vests to voting bots, one account had quit Steemit due to regulatory policies in his country and is currently powering down. For one of these accounts, I don't want to comment since I don't want this post to be flagged! Out of those 5 accounts who regularly engage with the community, two of them received delegations.
Top 20 Accounts In Terms Of Delegations Received
Total vests delegation received by all accounts from June 2017 to February, 2018 were 87743793266.5485 and top 20 accounts received 54352012549.5463 vests which makes around 61.94% of the total delegation received by all accounts. I am going to divide these twenty accounts into three categories, one if delegation received for a Steem application/project like @utopian-io and @dtube, second category would be of upvoting bots/persons and the third one would be of miscellaneous (Accounts that I am not sure about)
Account Name | Delegation Received | Project |
---|---|---|
@utopian-io | 7807548316.33762 | Project |
@postpromoter | 5329821136.91772 | Voting Bot/Person |
@smart | 4307299399.25092 | Miscellaneous |

@dmania | 1326667200.08772 | Project |
@peaceandlove | 1120982273 | Miscellaneous |
@sndbox | 1044082480 | Project |
@ed-proxy | 1036775520.57232 | User Not Found |
@therising | 1020010661.61085 | Voting Bot/Person |
@boomerang | 861687317.023456 | Voting Bot/Person |
@upmyvote | 825033639.075636 | Voting Bot/Person |
Out of these 20 accounts who received some massive delegations, 10 of them were voting bot accounts, 7 of them received delegations for some productive Steem based applications/projects and two of them fall under the miscellaneous category. Total amount of vests received by these 20 accounts were 54352012549.5463 and out of these, 23064827679.2988 vests were delegated Steemit based projects/applications (42.43%)
Conclusion
As far as the activity of top 20 accounts is concerned, we can see that only 5 of them have been regularly engaging with the community and others have either don't have any activity or they are just delegating their vests to voting bots. Out of total vests received by top 20 accounts, 57.57% of vests were delegated to voting bots from June 1, 2017 to February 28, 2018 which isn't a good indicator or I would say not an encouraging thing for a new user. Investors should be more focusing towards building new applications and projects that can benefit this platform in the longer run.
