When I’ve first read about this contest, it got me wondering what it meant for the Untalented you Challenge, two opposite words combine. I am like thinking, poor untalented is being challenged?
And because I am still a newbie that still wonder and wanders around steemit, I accidentally reesteemed one of the blog of our fellow steemians who joined the competition.
So that happened to be my first post before my actual #introducemyself blog, hahahaha.
So I decided why not join if there’s nothing that I am gonna lose, as the author says, no one is losing.
The photo above are fins with my username and the logo of steemit below. The story I am gonna share is all about me who have a big fear of deep blue sea and not having the ability to swim.
First just a quick introduction about myself, I am @wanderinggian21, 3 days old steeming hot newbie hehehe. I love to travel, I love seas and blue sky. But despite the fact that I love the water, the sea and the ocean, I have one problem, and for me it’s a major thing, I CANNOT SWIM!
Oh yeah, you read that right! I would like to call my self, “swimming sa-gigilid” (swimming but just stay ashore) hahahahha. But it came to a point, I get sick of just being in the shallow waters and just playing in the sand or taking pictures of my feet being touched by the waters… so I decided to use salbabida (floaters/ buoy) because I am so shy to use the typical type round salbabida, I bought a pair of floaters I can attached to my arm, though I looked like an idiot acting like buoyinwearing floates in my arms like a 7 years old, I will choose that rather than being just in the shore and being emotional because I cant swim. You know the feeling when you cant feel the sand in your feet anymore when you’re there in the sea and the water start to touches your chin, and you don’t have a friend who can swim nearby?
At least whenyou have your salbabida, you can be boastful for a while. Hahhahhahah
Every after travel, I regretted that I wasn’t able to interact with the fish in the sea. So there I decided to rent snorkelling gear on my next tour. During the snorkelling activities, I realize how unsanitized it is to use a public snorkel. And to my dismay when I am about to use my gears, my mask, it was damaged and cannot be use for snorkelling. A friend lend me her goggles which will not help with my breathing when my face is soaked under the water. I still try to use the goggles and the public mouth piece just so I can experience the underwater life even for a few second. And it was indeed a beautiful sight I enjoyed in little amount of time.
I went home after the tour wanting to see more of the marine life, but I know that will not be possible without the ability to swim. So while searching for my next trip, I saw this post on Facebook about freediving and it says in the post, non swimmers are welcome. And my heart pump into so much joy. Maybe this is the answer to my frustration to see the world under water.
I never knew what free diving is, I thought it is just the same as scuba diving. Seeing the amount, I said this could be possible, I chatted the organizer, asked a lot of questions, and booked my slot on his program. I told him I don’t have talent or skills in terms of deep sea swimming and I told him my kind of swimming and he said I found the right person. He said he can teach me how to be comfortable and confident in the middle of the sea wherein your feet is not touching any sand. I am kind of doubtful and been asking him to give me special attention during the event because I am really nervous. He explained that I can actually float in the sea because of some scientific explanation he said I cant remember anymore. Hahahaha. He also said, if I can’t master free diving in our first session its fine, but at least I can achieve my main dream, my main goal to remove my fear of being in the deep sea.
Thinking of that that he said, during the pre dive training, wherein we will need to practice breathing excersises, I am the weakest one with the fastet to quit holding one's breath. Mine is like less than 10 seconds to my dismay, I want to cry. My session mates have held their breath for f@ckin’ 45 sec to the minimum and max of 1 minute 30 plus seconds. And me, less than 10 seconds. During that time we are in a lying position, I wanted to stand up and quit and just go to bed and cry because how can I be there in the water if I cant even hold my breath for more than 10 seconds, but the instructor is trying to encourage me by saying this can be practiced and overtime it will be better. And yeah he’s right everything can be practice, practice makes it better or may be permanent. So after few more attempts, I was able to hold my breath for more than 20 seconds, I cant remember my max but I guess that’s lower than 40 seconds. I’m still the weakest but i dont mind it anymore. Anyways the breath hold is mainly for the diving purposes, though it will be a big help to be able to learn it to be more confident to take a deep plunge.
When I was a kid, I have a weak lungs so I guess this is the best “c’mon believe me there is a rootcause for this, me being the weakest in breath hold.”lol
After the toxic breath hold exercises and other exercises, we are sent to the area where we will be swimming all by ourselves wearing our mask, snorkel and fins. I am so in a shock because what the heck, I though there will be a quick practice / introduction on how to swim. You know the, basic swimming 101, wherein you’ll get to learn how to bubbles, glide and float in the water. But no, they just said wear your gears, jump into that crazy waves and paddle your way there in the middle of the sea where you can see that big floating bouy. The waves at that time is almost the same height of me when it hits the breakwater. And I was like are you crazy do you want me to commit suicide? And they said just watch the first two batches, some of them can swim and just wanting to learn how to dive, while few don’t really know how to swim. As I watch them, specially those who really cannot swim, some get panic in the middle of the trial but was able to touch the buoy and took a rest from the crazy waves. When it was my turn I have called all the saints I can asking for guidance and protection. I just keep on mind my instructor's instruction on leg works and movement, breathing techniques while wearing the gears to properly manage my oxygen consumption. I was almost slammed by the waves to the rocks, they almost jump off the coast to assist me because they taught I got injured, but they were glad when they saw me starting to take my way to the buoy slowly but surely. I even checked my progress and stopped because I am also gasping for air, and I am so happy that these people are not joking when they said I am not going down the water if I will move my feet in the right manner. Right there and then I have forgotten about the breath hold exercise and felt like I don’t need the talent to free dive, I just need to be confident in the water. The fins were of big use. I am surely gonna float all day if my feet is as wide as those fins, so that’s how mermaids and fish can swim so deep and so fast. The fins are the essential thing. I still continued with the free dive training and did several attempts to touch the bottom of the sea, but I wasn’t able to do that, I don’t care anymore, hahhahha
But yeah sometimes in life, you don’t need to be talended in a certain craft, u just have to be confident, enjoy the moment and every thing else will follow.
I hope someone who has the same fear as mine will overcome theirs and just give it a try to not have the talent, but to learn the skills.
Thank You @surpassinggoogle for this challenge, I get to realize something special about myself
