I think far too many people believe that propaganda means shouting “Heil H*tler!” or making memes with Nazi symbolism.
The shocking images and symbols and slogans do serve a purpose: that purpose is to desensitize people to the horror of those ideas and slogans, and to make people who are promoting exactly the same ideas couched in more acceptable language seem all that much more reasonable.
While those "shock" images and words garner a great deal of media and public attention, that’s not what effective propaganda is. Effective propaganda looks reasonable and sane and exploits and perverts cultural norms to persuade people of the most horrific ideas. (An obvious example is neo-Nazis recent adoption of the hashtag "#LoveEveryone".) This radicalization happens in incremental steps that are so small as to be almost imperceptible.
Andrew Anglin is so very, very good at this, and his Twitter account serves as a remarkably effective recruiting tool.
If you have any grasp of history at all, this is the right time to start familiarizing yourself, in a very serious way, with the techniques of propaganda.
Take this as a notice: anyone who attempts to make the case that I’m engaging in hyperbole and that Anglin or his promoters are reasonable people that we should “hear out” will be thrown out of my life instantly, with no recourse or further discussion. That applies to absolutely everyone, including friends and family, no matter how long we’ve been in each other’s lives.
Put down your memes and podcasts and TikToks and starts learning the history of the first half of the 20th century.
