This Tuesday, the third episode of Syfy's new series 'Channel Zero: Candle Cove' will air. With each episode the series, inspired the creepypasta story by Kris Straub, is only getting darker, better, pulling you into the mystery that is 'Candle Cove'.
As we follow Mike Paineter (Paul Schneider), a child psychologist who has returned to his hometown, a series of child disappearance begin, mirroring the events that happened when Mike was a kid.
Schneider stars alongside Fiona Shaw, Shaun Benson, Natalie Brown, Luisa D’Oliveira, Abigail Pniowsky. Cassandra Consiglio plays the role of “The Tooth Child”.
In the second episode we learned a little more about the mysterious show 'Candle Cove' and we witnessed Mike confess that he murdered his brother. In episode three, we will learn why. We will also see some of the people Mike old friends go too far in an attempt to learn what truly happened to their loved ones. In the final moments of episode three, viewers will learn just how dark the series really is.
In episode two, it was briefly mentioned that Mike was sent away after his brother's disappearance. During a round-table discussion I had with the 'Channel Zero's' creator and showrunner Nick Antosca, I asked about where Mike was sent and why. Antosca revealed that Mike was sent to stay with an aunt and uncle because his mother had a nervous breakdown. I also asked, "Why did he confess to his mother?" Antosca explained that the pressure Mike was under had come to a boiling point and that after the body of his brother was found he just had to tell someone, especially since someone had moved the body. I admit, I was a little surprised that his mom turned him in.
Antosca told me something interesting. The series is filled with Easter eggs that pay homage to horror films. At the very beginning of the second episode, Katie is watching candle cove. If you look closely you will notice that the shrimp-looking puppet is wearing a Freddy Krueger sweater. Antosca told us that it was indeed a nod to 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'. Keep your eyes open for new Easter eggs in the upcoming episodes. You might also notice a feel similar to 'Child's Play' in some of the episodes. That's because Don Mancini, creator and writer of the 'Child's Play/Chucky franchise wrote several of them, including the second episode.
One thing Antosca keeps repeating during our discussions is that the show and it's ending will be up to the viewer's interpretation. Everything from the puppets, to scenes involving Mike's daughter, the events, and the story line are all up to our interpretation, unlike with most series that lay out story lines and characters in firm way. You know a series is a good when you spend time debating, questioning elements, when you can't get it out of your head. 'Candle Cove' is definitely one of those.
The third episode is a good one. I won't spoil it , but I will say this, the last few moments of the episode take a sinister and we learn just how powerful 'Candle Cove' can be. You will learn that someone, not a puppet, may be pulling strings in secret.
