Earthquake and tsunami of 2004 Indian Ocean

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake occurred at 08:58:53 UTC on December 26; The epicenter is located off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake shocks are 9.1 to 9.3 in the scale of Moment and IX (Violent) power in Mercalli intensity scale. The underwater megathrust earthquake occurred when the Indian Plate was pushed down by the Burma Plate and triggered a series of deadly tsunamis along the coastal plains bordering the Indian Ocean. Tsunami waves of up to 30 meters (100 ft) killed 230,000-280,000 people in 14 countries and drowned coastal settlements. This earthquake and tsunami is one of the deadliest natural disasters in history. Indonesia is a country with the most severe impacts other than Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.
