‘American Oil Memes’ Is the Best Thing on the Internet Right Now

in #truth7 years ago

Memes have become the fabric of everyday internet life, and while many are often silly or flat out stupid, every once in a while, a new meme craze provides potent social commentary.

Last year, “If it pleases the crown” memes questioned the fundamental authority of government and mocked the widespread belief that we must submit to it. This year, a new page called American Oil Memes is brazenly (and hilariously) calling out the U.S. empire’s lust for the commodity, and their content is getting thousands of shares.

Here are some of the page’s top posts:

Some of the memes draw on popular culture to make their point:

Another Spongebob meme calls out the war machine even more broadly, highlighting what happens when the U.S. invades a country:

And of course, there are plenty of display of memeception, using other familiar memes to make new memes:

The memes may be lighthearted, but they tackle a serious subject. A 2014 analysis by researchers at the University of Essex and the University of Portsmouth concluded that third-party forces are more likely to intervene in a nation’s conflict when “a) the country at war has large reserves of oil, b) the relative competition in the sector is limited and c) the potential intervener has a higher demand for oil.”

As American Oil Memes simply describes itself:

“Our page makes fun of the American hunger for oil.”
