Little exploration: Kastoria, Greece

in #trip6 years ago

This is my first post on Steemit so I decided to make it simple!

Greece is a wonderful place.

I'm really into capturing everything beautiful around me and messing with the result so, today I have a couple of pics from a place called Kastoria.

Kastoria is a small city in Northern Greece.
This town is known for its beautiful Byzantine churches, fur clothing industry(since Kastoria is an international fur trade centre) and its lake.
The city is surrounded by the lake so you can enjoy long walks beside it or simply enjoy the local delicacies right next to it at one of the MANY restaurants.
You can also go on expeditions inside the old city (called Doltso). There are also Mushroom tasting/Mushroom clubs so you can always ask to join them at their walks in the woods!
If you happen to be there at 6-7-8 of January you'll be pleased to know that every year there is a traditional carnival happening where you get to put on a costume, drink some local wine, listen and dance to music performed by brass bands in the streets. There is also a morning parade where local clubs dress up and parade the streets!

Here are some photos of the city(and my face lol):

In conlusion:
Pros
-if you enjoy hiking and exploring nature this place is for you
-it's cheap!
-great for family vacations
-the churches are gorgeous
-quiet place
-the food is delicious

Cons
-If you enjoy partying consider this your warning: this is not the city for you. There are only a few places to go and have a drink after 1 am (at least from Mon-Fri). On the other hand, Thessaloniki(one of the biggest cities in Greece) is less than 2 hours away from Kastoria-if you don't mind a roadtrip while you're there
-It's VERY cold in the Fall
-the drivers are quite reckless in the streets

Have you ever been in Kastoria? Do you plan on going? Let me know your opinion!
