TribeSteemUp Bi-Weekly Question Tie-Up: "How Much Control Do You Feel You Have Over Your Life?"

How Much Control Do You Feel You Have Over Your Life?

It is important to keep asking these questions, so that we can stay aware of what is happening in of lives . There are of course things that are out of our control and that is just the way that life is, we can not control what happens naturally in the world and we can not control other people and the way that they may and may not see us. The only thing we can control is ourselves.

Yet how many take that responsibility, take the responsibility for their overall well being and for the way in which they interact with the world and those around them. We are living in a time where many feel powerless, feel like they have no control. Maybe control is not even the best word to use. Yet we do decide how we begin each day, we do decide how we react to different situations in our lives. Right now we need to take our power back.

Dealing with Arrows: How Much Choice Do We Have Anyway?

@riverflow

I'm such a one for vacillating, it's taken me all week to consider my respond to the TSU Question of the Week. On a good and positive day, I believe we do have a choice about how we live our lives, but most of the time, I believe we have very little power. We're too shaped by social conditioning, culture, where we are born, and happenstance to really have much of a choice, and we limit many of the choices we have ourselves to be the person we want to be, or believe we can be, based on any number of factors. Choice has always been illusory.
Buddha told the story of two arrows - the first arrow is the painful one, the one we have little choice over. We can't help the family member that dies of cancer, or the freak storm that sweeps our house away in a flood. However, the second arrow is our real choice - how do we respond to that? Do we attach to, or identify with, the pain? Does it become the narrative of our lives? Do we give up and die? Do we choose to be angry and distrustful of the world based on one event or series of events, making that our ultimate truth?

A Response to TribeSteemUp Bi-Weekly Question - How Much Control Do You Feel You Have Over Your Life..

@porters

I found there was much that was out of my control but when thinking of what is within my control, the idea of cause and effect arose and more better suited, the more circular concept of Karma (or Kamma in Pali) is where I felt we had control.
When you look at where the word Karma comes from, it is from the Sanskrit word kri,
which means "to do" or "to act"
The Buddha explained it as:
this arises, that becomes
From Wikipedia
In the Buddhist tradition, karma refers to action driven by intention (cetanā) which leads to future consequences.
With the Buddhist philosophy translating as:
The interdependent origination of all the forms and phases of life

"How much control do you feel you have over your life?" - here's my answer on the @TribeSteemUp Bi-Weekly Question

@nomad-magus

Contemplating for a while this question, posted for the community to answer by @trucklife-family, has made me realize there are actually three questions here:
What is "control" and is there a free will in the world, for us, human beings?
Is it good or bad? In other words, would we want to have free will?
Personally, what's my take on feeling the control in my life?
Free will for all?
Six months ago I posted an article about that same issue. Here's one quote from it:
"As for one, regrettably, I have found out that the human doesn't have much of a saying. I say regrettably because there have been times when I wished I hadn't had to deal with the freedom issue. So for me, it's not a choice actually (some of you may argue and say that everything is a choice, and that could be an interesting discussion that I will save for another time)."

Letting Go of What's Beyond Our Control.

@minismallholding

I thought I'd have a go at the tribesteemup bi-weekly question, but it's been a little harder getting a tired brain to work on it than I would have liked; so I hope this makes some sense.
How much control do you feel you have over your life?
I’d have to say, only so much, but certainly more than I have over other's lives. You see, much of how we live our lives is impacted by the environment and even the people around us. We are restricted by our income, by the regulations of our countries, by the needs of our families and even by the climate we live in. The only real control we have in our lives is how we choose to live within these confines.

@nainaztengra

To think of it, I may have complete control over myself but may be not complete control of life happening around me where a lot of dependency is on the external circumstances and people. And why so?
The External influences
We are all the time surrounded by so many situations and people. Be it our family, our social circles, the workplace people, the political people governing the place we live, the religious advocates, the hierarchical systems that we are all the time surrounded with.
Just a few e.g. like;
I want things to happen my way in my family
I want my Children to go to a particular school;
I want to work in a particular place
I want to pay Tax my way
And so many other such conditions that I want or I do not want to do; but do I always have a choice?

TribeSteemUp Question Of The Week - How Much Control Do You Feel You Have Over Your Life?

@trucklife-family

Control is a funny old thing, and I tend to have very strong opinions about it, about what it means for us as individuals. For one I do not like the idea of anyone having control over my life, we leave ourselves powerless if we let others take control. And yet so many people happily walk around out of touch with their bodies and their minds, because they have put their faith in other people solving their problems for them. How much control can we have if we do not know ourselves?
Of course there are times in our lives where we may need to see certain professionals, but some have become so dependent, so used to turning to others, that they no longer know how to turn to themselves for the help and guidance that they need. How many people today take full control of their own well being.

How Much Control Do You Feel You Have Over Your Life?

@truthabides

I like to think that I have complete control over my life because I make my own decisions and proceed accordingly. I do have complete control over my actions but even they are tainted by the limits of my physical, intellectual, and spiritual health.
But to say that I have complete control over my life seems paramount to saying that there’s nothing in this life that I’d like to change and I don’t think that’s true for anyone, certainly not me.
As it stands, I can’t own a place to live without the government. I can’t even work without government interference. The subjugation of our natural rights goes on and on so I think in some respect that it’s fair to say that all of our actions are carried out within the confines of a carefully constructed control matrix while giving the illusion of freedom.

Very good posts, I liked to see the variety of opinions ranging from practical points of view to quite interesting philosophical postures, some of them complex, some others simpler.

I also took the liberty of answering the question on my own a few days ago: Here's the link for anyone who might be interested. It's always good to read different points of view and expand our thinking and our knowledge. In a way, reality is fragile...

Life is something that we may not be able to control in its totality, or think we cannot. What is certain is that we can undertake a quest to control it as much as we can, thus achieving more freedom and probably more happiness.

This was a sneakily tough question! As you take either path (no control or all control) you can easily become overwhelmed in a kind of existential blur... LOL... I know I did. :) It has been a pleasure to support and read most of the posts - thanks for the brain food and the existential prod. ;)
