What would you do for society if you had all the resources you needed? (@TribeSteemUp Bi-Weekly Question)

The question "what would you do for society if you had all the resources you needed?", says that resources would be there for whatever a specific need is. Whatever the "doing" for society you want to materialize, the requirements or needs to actualize that action would be fulfilled by resources being present in whatever form. Whatever your goal for society, you would have the resources.

Energy

As it stands, the world is driven by energy demand. Energy makes everything happen in our modern world, from the electronics we use, to the transportation that interconnects the people, resources and economies of the planet.

Having energy resources gives us the freedom to move around and have access to so much. But at the same time, it also keeps us dependent on the energy moguls like big oil that keep us hooked like a drug, coming back for more, always. This keeps us dependent on them and the use of oil. If we want a truly independent world for all, having energy independence would be a huge step to liberating ourselves from the clutches of the oil barons.

From Scarcity to Abundance

Our demand for the scarce resource puts us under the thumb of the big businesses. If I, or all of us, had all the resources we needed, then this would seem to indicate a transition from scarcity to abundance. The abundance of energy would free us from our dependence on needing to buy it, and liberate our chains of economic survivability to some degree. There would still be the need for food, water and shelter.

But if I had all the resources needed, and my needs were to free society by creating a world of abundance and not scarcity, then the food, water, and shelter issue would also be dealt with, as all the resources would be there for me to make it happen.

Resource Source?

Where do all the resources I need come from? Who knows. Maybe everyone is working together to create a better world together. We would all work for the betterment of all, to ensure we all had the basics of living: food, water and shelter. It could take us 1 day per week of common work to provide for our basic needs. Then we could be free to pursue activities and jobs that would not be restricting us from a position of economic survivability to further our existence. Anyone could truly do anything they want, hopefully pursuing avenues that help to progress mankind and the planet of other species to a better future together.

But, maybe we would have the technology to create anything from a source of free energy, like so-called "zero point" energy, etc. Maybe we would have replicators like in Star Trek than can materialize anything we need.

Freedom

If we have technology making it a reality, like access to a free energy source, then the whole equation for independence and freedom of individuals comes down to energy freedom and independence. Free energy technology is at the root of maintaining our modern way of living and being the most free.

Freed from the enslavement of jobs people don't to do but need to just to survive; just to be able to pay for food, water, shelter and the electricity and other energy we use in our modern lives. We could then be again free to pursue whatever avenue in life we choose, unrestricted by the economic survival needs that are currently imposed upon us to exist. People could choose to do things that help benefit themselves and others, progressing humanity to greater heights imaginable.

Of course, the way we live now isn't written in stone. We don't need to live this way with so much dependent on energy being used to facilitate our way of life. We could live without energy in our lives. We could end transportation and electronics use. But that would be like turning the clock back on human history and making things harder for most of mankind, as it was in the past where survival was difficult and life was harsh.

That doesn't mean we can't be more independent locally, while still having some things imported, while still having technology in our lives. Regardless of energy independence, the future I would like us to create is one were food is everywhere, with food forests and veganic permaculture being used to create near self-sustaining harmony in how plants are grown.

Imagine seeing a city with green everywhere, with plants and trees on all the streets, bearing fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. You would go outside your home and abundance would be all around. Food would be everywhere for us to benefit from. It has limitations when winter comes, maybe forcing us to depend on transportation more. But we could also have indoor greenhouses in rooftops growing all year round. Urban farming can change things. The way we live can change radically for the better, giving us more freedom and independence, even if we have limited energy resources.

Purpose and Meaning in Life

Having all the resources need to do something, I would free our lives and existence from needing to work jobs we don't want just so we can survive and exist. I would create more abundance and freedom. I imagine a world where people would do things that mattered more to them. Hopefully things that mattered. Things that benefited others as well, not just themselves.

I don't imagine a world of people who just sit on their couches and play video games all the time. That would not be a positive direction for humanity. We already have too much of that :P I think given the opportunity to learn anything for free, people would become more actualized and realized as individuals. They would have greater existential conviction. They would have greater meaning, purpose, drive and objectives for their lives and existence. I see a better world emerging for each individual and for us all.

What do you think? Does that sound like a society you would like to live in? :) I think most of us would like to more food growing everywhere. Most utopian art has more green in it. We know there is something missing from our drab and dead concrete jungle way of living. It will make us more free and more "alive", both in physical and psychological health.

Interesting topic for sure.

I think many people equate poverty or "need" with a lack of material resources.

Currently in the US even the poorest of the poor have access to luxuries even the richest kings and robber Barons couldn't have even fantasized about 150 years ago.

The perception of "wealth" seems to be very much subjective. I, as a middle income American might seem like a Rockefeller, or Carnegie in terms of wealth compared to somebody from a rural village in Uganda who feels blessed to have a tin roof over their head and one goat.

I think the mind control tactics and systems of enslavement, (political, monetary/debt, education, institutionalized religion, etc.) have far more to do with human suffering than lack of resources in the current state of this world

Yup, comparatively, things are way better now than in the past, but then comparatively to others in the present, some have it worst than others. But just some poor have more access to tvs, cable, movies and other "luxuries", doesn't mean their lives are well off. I suppose if they didn't spend the money on superfluous things like that, and lives within their means of survival, they could find contentment. But ppl have desires and wants, and when they aren't attained they feel like their lives are miserable. The systems that keep us down are often why ppl seek to do things like escape into drugs, alcohol, entertainment, gaming, trips or just escape the boredom of the daily grind. Failure to attain desires that make us "feel-good" bring the dull boring feeling. Finding contentment seems to be hard for modern people :/

Lack of meaning and purpose in one's life is a small slice of hell that even those with the most opulent lifestyles can experience.

If I could offer guidance towards true meaning, purpose and the ability to attain wealth as a resource that would be my answer.

However that is far more complex than the standard western answer of tossing money at problems that have much deeper roots.

Energy plays a huge role as you point out, but curious what your thoughts are on the monopoly of land (and restrictions placed on the unclaimed land that the governments exert their control over). It seems that the days of being able to wander to some unclaimed land and set up the roots are a thing of the past now, funneling all who would choose not to be guilty of the crime of vagrancy/trespassing to enslave themselves to some degree to the corporate prisons of our time and energy.

I am one who does believe in ownership of land as it wouldn't be fair to work land into a productive source only for others to steal the rewards of it (as government has mastered) yet this same idea of ownership is being taken to extremes allowing them to force most into their boxes of dependency. Am curious if you have any thoughts on this as I must admit looking at this from a voluntary system it leaves me unable to think of a solution that is fair to all without something suddenly not being voluntary.

The land issue is bad. So, every piece of land is owned, simply because people got their first? And they don't even use it, it's just "theirs". Everyone who comes later never can just own land like those before, now it's all owned and everyone has to pay to get something to use. The only right to land is land you actually use, as I see it. And I'm not talking about corporation. That's never owned by them, but should be on a contractual basis with the community. If they break rules, then they can get evicted by the community. Only individuals can own land that they use.

Otherwise, as has been done, anyone could go along and claim land to exploit to make money and deplete resources that make themselves rich, even though the resources where never theirs to being with. You can make a loan for $1 million, pay ppl to work, and then get rich, pay off the $1 million debt, and be an owner of everything while all you did was get a load and paid others with it to work the land to make you rich.

It's all bullshit. The government claiming it might be a possible mitigation for that behavior and rampant domination of everything... Because people won't engage in self-control, then government is empowered by those demanding external control be imposed on them. The world is going to be ruled by governments until we learnt o engage in more self-control. Anarchy is a long way away...

I think to an extent I agree. The number to which I wouldn’t agree is hard to place but people don’t need to own 175 acres of land unless they are serious farmers. I think having a few acres is reasonable and to let others do what they need in the next plots. That’s a comical thought though with the criminals who find the time to harass and fine young kids from opening a lemonade stand or shovel cars and homes in the winter months.

I think there would be even more waste.

Abundance and gluttonous go hand in hand. That's the trick right there: identifying the people you can trust to have self control and help everyone.

99% of the people would become instantly corrupted and buy that Lambo.

From food growing everywhere by itself? What would it matter? It would compost and feed the next plants that grow afterwards. If we wanted to avoid waste, we could collect it and spread the love ;)

Have you ever lived next to a pile of compost?

Yeah I guess with lots of it that wouldn't be so good. But, it could be collected, composted elsewhere in a few block radius, and brought back later to nourish the plants.

I think we are working to something like this but it won’t be as we’ve seen in fiction! Having an excess of resources won’t solve much unless a change of mindset comes along with it because we would instead of living harmoniously have greed create disparity

I think the fundamental shift in thinking will be biggest obstacle we are so engrained in the current system most poeole won’t be able to handle concepts like universal basic income and being productive creatively or altruistically to further the species

A utopian society with people that still hold self preservation above all will struggle! Having all those resources will go a long way in helping educate people and break stereotypes for a percentage of the population but I’m not sure enough would be ready to let go of the status quo

Yes, the ideal is always a shift in thinking to change how we live. If there is abundance, there is no self preservation and survival as a focus, not greed that creates disparity.

Having an unlimited source of clean energy would be a great thing to have. I think that to an extent hemp can provide these if we just learn to develop the technology. Look at ethanol, it’s made from corn. Full growth hemp can be harvested 3 times a year in the northern part of the US and year round in the southern part. I haven’t figured out if it can be used as a fuel but I’m sure one of the 20,000 uses of the plant can certainly be as a fuel source; it is already usable as an oil so fuel is close to that. I hope that we can eventually get the uses out of the green gold that it’s capable of!

Only because I know you like DIY projects, if you want check out my latest DIY:

Yes, that would be a step in the right direction :) Hemp could greatly help us move in a better direction for clothes, paper, oils, plastics and health :)

like the last point the most!
we need to live, not to work to have a chance to live, better to say - to exist..
great words!
and all the rest ideas are very deep and wise, like many of your posts;)

Thanks :)

@krnel I think this where we have been and are.... Its going to take a lot of people waking up to build a better world for the future generations.

I love the idea of food and plants growing everywhere. I also do not think we would end up lazy so long as we had a culture that did not promote it, I do not believe it is in any way a characteristic of humanity any more than a desire for exploration and innovation is, it's just that many of us don't feel connected to others or connected to the world.

I can see you are already making progress while working towards that world!
